Getting Around

Transport options for living in Barbados.

Public Transport Overview

Barbados has island-wide public and private buses rather than rail. Blue government buses, yellow minibuses and white ZR vans are cheap, frequent on main corridors and cash-based, but schedules and comfort vary.

Taxi & Rideshare

Taxis are common but usually not metered. Agree the fare before departure, especially from the airport, cruise port, west coast hotels and late-night venues.

Rideshare (Long-distance)

Global rideshare coverage is limited compared with large countries. Local taxi apps and WhatsApp driver networks matter more.

Cycling

Cycling is pleasant on quiet coastal and rural roads but risky on narrow busy roads. Heat, buses, blind corners and limited shoulders are serious constraints.

Intercity Trains

No passenger rail system. Inter-parish travel is by bus, taxi or private car.

Driving

Barbados drives on the left. Speed limits: 30 km/h in school zones, 40 km/h urban, 60 km/h rural roads, 80 km/h on major highways (ABC Highway, Spring Garden Highway). Roads can be narrow, roundabouts are common, parking is tight near beaches and Bridgetown, and potholes/flooding increase after heavy rain.

Airports

Grantley Adams International Airport is the only international airport. Allow extra time during winter peak season, Crop Over, cruise days and school commute periods.
