Denominations
Coins: 1, 5, 10, 25 cents and 1 dollar. Notes: 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 Barbados dollars. The Barbados dollar is pegged at Bds$2 = US$1.
Payment Culture
Cards are widely accepted in hotels, supermarkets, restaurants and professional services, but cash is still useful for buses, markets, beach vendors, small rum shops and some tradespeople. US dollars are often accepted in tourist areas, usually at 2:1, but change may be given in BBD.
ATM Tips
ATMs are common in Bridgetown, Holetown, Speightstown, Oistins and shopping centres. Use bank or mall ATMs, watch foreign-card fees, and keep some cash because bank outages and holiday weekends can strain machines.
Exchange Tips
The BBD peg makes budgeting easier, but exchange-control rules still matter. Use authorised dealers for foreign exchange and keep wire-transfer evidence, especially for property purchases, business investment and future repatriation.
