Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Barbados.
Barbados is family-friendly but expensive for childcare, private school, cars and healthcare. Families should secure school places, medical cover and hurricane plans before arrival.
Maternity leave
Before birth: May be split before and after birth with medical certificate.
After birth: 14 weeks paid maternity leave for single births (from 1 June 2025 under updated Employment of Women (Maternity Leave) Act); 17 weeks for multiple births. At least 6 weeks before delivery and 8 weeks after delivery. Requires at least 1 year of continuous service with the same employer.
Job protection: Employees are entitled to return with seniority and employment protections under maternity legislation.
Parental/paternity leave
Max duration: No comprehensive statutory parental leave scheme in Barbados beyond the maternity entitlement. Fathers have no statutory paternity leave right; some employers offer 1–5 days contractually. Negotiate family leave terms in your employment contract.
Split rules / Elterngeld: Negotiate family leave in contract/HR policy.
Benefits

Duration: 14 weeks (single birth); 17 weeks (multiple births)
Eligibility: Female employees with at least 26 qualifying NIS contribution weeks and 1 year of continuous service with the same employer. The maternity benefit cannot be claimed if maternity pay was received in the preceding 3 years.
How to apply: Apply to the National Insurance Office (nis.gov.bb) with: completed maternity benefit claim form, medical certificate confirming pregnancy and expected delivery date, employer certification. Apply 6–8 weeks before expected delivery. NIS pays 66.6% of insurable earnings; the employer is expected to top up to full salary.
