Returnable Containers Act — national bottle deposit scheme (since 1986) — Bottle Deposit System
Barbados has had a national beverage container deposit scheme under the Returnable Containers Act since 1 June 1986 (last updated 2009). It covers sealed metal, glass, and plastic containers up to 1 gallon containing soft drinks, carbonated water, mineral water, beer, and malt beverages. A deposit (BBD cents) is included in the purchase price; return the empty container to any retailer selling that type of beverage to receive the refund.
Glass containers: BBD $0.20 per container. Metal and plastic containers: BBD $0.10 per container. (Note: BBD 2 = USD 1, so these are approximately USD $0.10 and USD $0.05 respectively.)
Return empty, clean containers to any retail outlet (supermarket, rum shop, convenience store) that sells the same type of beverage. The retailer is obligated to accept returns under the Act. No reverse vending machines — returns are handled manually at the counter.
