Payment Culture
Bosnia is primarily a cash society, especially outside Sarajevo. Cards are accepted in major supermarkets, hotels and restaurants in cities, but small restaurants, markets, rural businesses and petrol stations in smaller towns often prefer cash. Always carry KM for taxis, markets and day-to-day spending. ATMs (bankomati) are widely available in urban areas.
ATM Tips
Raiffeisen Bank, UniCredit and Sparkasse ATMs are the most widespread. Foreign-card fees apply; Wise and Revolut cards minimise fees. ATMs in smaller towns and mountain resorts can run out of cash on weekends.
Exchange Tips
The BAM is pegged to the EUR at a fixed rate of 1.95583 BAM = 1 EUR via a Currency Board arrangement in place since 1998. This rate never fluctuates. Use bank branches or licensed exchange offices (mjenjačnica) for EUR/BAM conversion — rates are consistent. Avoid exchanging money with unlicensed individuals.
