For dogs, cats and ferrets: (1) Ensure ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15-digit microchip is implanted BEFORE the first rabies vaccination. (2) Administer rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel (first vaccination) — booster vaccinations are valid immediately. (3) Obtain EU Pet Passport (from EU countries) or official veterinary health certificate (from non-EU countries) — issued within 10 days of travel. (4) Declare your pet to the border veterinary inspector (Veterinarska inspekcija) on arrival at Sarajevo Airport or main border crossings. (5) Register your dog with the local municipal authority (opština) within your first month — bring vaccination records and microchip documentation. Fee: KM 5–20/year. CITES-listed species (exotic birds, reptiles) require additional import permits from BiH Ministry of Foreign Trade (mvteo.gov.ba) — apply 6–8 weeks in advance.
Stray dog presence is a reality in BiH cities and rural areas — keep your pet on a leash, especially in parks and near waste areas. Stray dogs can be aggressive and may carry parasites. No quarantine is required for pets from most European countries if documentation requirements are met. Pets entering from non-EU countries require an official veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel. CITES species face strict inspection at airports — ensure all permits are obtained well in advance. The EU Pet Passport is accepted at all BiH border crossings from EU countries.
