Bosnia and Herzegovina (BA)
Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is a Balkan gem combining Ottoman heritage, Habsburg architecture, Adriatic mountain scenery, and one of the lowest costs of living in Europe.
Insurance Guide
Which insurances you actually need in Bosnia and Herzegovina, prioritised.
Insurance in Bosnia and Herzegovina is available for all essential needs at very affordable premiums compared to Western Europe. Third-party motor liability is the only mandatory insurance. Private health insurance is strongly recommended for expats not enrolled in the public system (non-employed or seeking better coverage). The main regulator is the Agencija za nadzor osiguranja FBiH and the RS Insurance Supervisory Agency. Local insurers (Sarajevo-osiguranje, Euroherc, Triglav) and international brands (Allianz, UNIQA) both operate in BiH.
Legally Mandatory
- - Osiguranje od autoodgovornosti (third-party motor liability) — mandatory for all registered vehicles
Third-Party Motor Liability (Autoodgovornost)
Mandatory third-party liability insurance covering bodily injury and property damage caused to others in a road accident. Green Card (Zelena karta) is included for international travel.
Who needs it: Every vehicle owner or operator in BiH — legally mandatory. Driving without it results in fines and vehicle confiscation.
Annual cost: KM 350–900/year for a standard passenger vehicle (varies by vehicle type, engine size, driver age and claims history)
Compare quotes at any major insurer — premiums are regulated but vary by company. Green Card for travel to EU/EEA countries is included at no extra cost or a small additional premium. Comprehensive (kasko) insurance is optional but recommended for newer or valuable vehicles.
Private Health Insurance
Covers private clinic consultations, specialist treatment, hospitalisation in private facilities, dental care, optical care and medical evacuation to Western Europe — filling gaps in the public system.
Who needs it: Non-employed expats (public system not accessible), freelancers, families needing dental/optical coverage, and any expat wanting private clinic access without out-of-pocket payments.
Annual cost: KM 80–350/month (KM 960–4,200/year) depending on age, coverage level and provider
For families: include dental, optical and medical evacuation. Most private clinics in Sarajevo (Eurofarm, Medicus) have direct billing with major insurers. SafetyWing is popular with digital nomads (from USD 42/month). International plans (Cigna, Aetna) are used by UN/EUFOR/OSCE diplomatic staff.
Comprehensive Car Insurance (Kasko)
Covers damage to your own vehicle from accidents, theft, fire, flooding, hail and vandalism — on top of mandatory third-party liability.
Who needs it: Owners of newer vehicles (under 10 years) or those with car financing. Mountain road conditions in BiH increase the risk of single-vehicle accidents.
Annual cost: KM 400–1,200/year depending on vehicle value, age and coverage level
Kasko is generally cost-effective for vehicles valued above KM 15,000. Check for excess/deductible clauses. Mountain driving, flooding (Miljacka river area) and hail increase local risk.
Contents/Household Insurance
Covers theft, fire, flooding and other damage to personal belongings in a rented or owned property. Also covers liability as a tenant for accidental damage to the rental.
Who needs it: All renters and homeowners with meaningful personal property. Important given earthquake risk in parts of BiH and occasional Miljacka river flooding.
Annual cost: KM 80–200/year for a 1-bedroom apartment contents; KM 200–600/year for buildings insurance (homeowner)
Rental agreements in BiH rarely require renters insurance, but it is sensible given break-in risk in some areas. Check whether your landlord has buildings insurance — if not, you bear structural damage risk. Flood cover is worth considering for ground-floor riverside apartments.
Travel Insurance
Covers medical costs, trip cancellation, baggage loss and emergency evacuation during travel outside BiH. BiH residents are not in the EU — Schengen travel may require travel insurance as a visa condition.
Who needs it: Any BiH resident travelling outside the country. Schengen visa applicants must show proof of travel insurance (minimum EUR 30,000 medical coverage) when applying.
Annual cost: Single trip: KM 20–80. Annual multi-trip (Europe): KM 100–250/year
Many international health insurance policies include travel coverage — verify before purchasing separate travel insurance. Annual multi-trip policies are cost-effective for frequent travellers. If you have private health insurance with evacuation coverage, additional travel insurance may be redundant.
Life Insurance
Pays a lump sum or monthly benefit to named beneficiaries on death or permanent disability of the insured. Term life and savings-linked endowment products available.
Who needs it: Expats with dependents in BiH or abroad, or with mortgage obligations in BiH.
Annual cost: Basic term life (non-smoker, age 35, KM 100,000 cover, 10 years): KM 360–720/year
International organisations (UN, OSCE, EU Delegation) typically include group life and disability coverage in employment packages. Check your employer policy before purchasing additional life insurance.
Comparison sites
Motor insurance (autoodgovornost) is the one non-negotiable — never drive without it. Fines are significant and you are personally liable for any accident damages.
For health insurance: if you are employed, confirm your employer has registered you with the cantonal health fund. If freelancing or self-employed, set up private health insurance before arrival.
Always read the policy exclusions (isključenja) carefully — pre-existing conditions, extreme sports and certain activities are commonly excluded.
Keep all insurance policy documents and the insurer's 24-hour emergency number in your phone and wallet.
