Animal bites carry rabies risk — post-exposure treatment must start the same day
Cambodia has one of South-East Asia's highest rabies burdens. Dogs (stray and domestic), monkeys at temple sites (Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh Wat Phnom), cats, and bats are all potential carriers. Rabies is almost universally fatal once symptoms appear, but post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is highly effective when started promptly. The PEP vaccine series requires multiple doses over 14–28 days. Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) is needed for deep or multiple bites but supply can be constrained — Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh and international clinics in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are the most reliable sources.
⚡ Rabies infection is fatal in virtually 100% of symptomatic cases. Delays of even 24–48 hours in starting PEP after a high-risk bite significantly increase risk. Children are at disproportionate risk because bites are more likely to be on the face and head and may not be reported immediately.
✅ Before arrival: strongly consider a pre-exposure rabies vaccination series (3 shots over 21+ days) — recommended for all long-term Cambodia residents, especially families with children. After any bite, scratch, or lick from an animal on broken skin: wash the wound immediately with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes, then go to Calmette Hospital (Phnom Penh) or a reputable international clinic on the same day for PEP assessment. Do not wait for symptoms to appear. Report to your insurer immediately — PEP costs $200–600 USD for the full course.
Using a fake paid e-Arrival website
Cambodia e-Arrival submission is free on the official portal, but lookalike sites charge fees or harvest data.

Organised crime groups operating in parts of Sihanoukville and along the Thai and Vietnamese borders have recruited foreigners — including English-speaking professionals — under the guise of legitimate tech, sales, or customer service roles. Once inside, workers may be coerced into conducting online fraud. The ILO and UNODC flagged Cambodia-based compounds heavily in 2024-2025 and enforcement action continued into 2026, but operations relocated or restructured rather than disappearing.
⚡ Debt bondage, document confiscation, physical threats, and serious criminal exposure if coerced participation in fraud is later prosecuted.
✅ Verify any employer's registered Cambodian business address, MOC registration number, and physical office location before travelling. Any role offering very high pay for vague "online sales" or "customer outreach" in a remote or border location is a red flag. Contact your embassy if you suspect a compound situation.
Paying deposit to someone who does not own the property
In Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, a persistent rental fraud involves a sub-tenant or agent presenting themselves as the owner and collecting first month plus two months' deposit before disappearing or the real owner terminating the arrangement. With no formal tenancy register in Cambodia, verifying ownership is not always straightforward, and Facebook Marketplace rental listings have been heavily exploited.

Cambodia requires a health certificate issued by an accredited government veterinarian in the origin country (issued within 5-10 days of departure), proof of rabies vaccination (valid for minimum 1 year), and a microchip conforming to ISO 11784/11785. The General Directorate of Animal Health and Production (GDAHP) at the airport may detain or turn back animals that arrive without compliant paperwork, and the inspection system has become more thorough since 2025 following a series of rabies alerts.

Airport shuttle and ride-hailing services are being established, but the transport ecosystem was still maturing as of early 2026.
