Kenya (KE)
Kenya is East Africa's economic, tech, and diplomatic powerhouse — home to the United Nations' Africa headquarters, the Silicon Savannah startup ecosystem, and some of the world's most iconic wildlife.
Leaving Kenya
How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
3–6 months before departure: start job/permit cancellation process, give notice at work, start rental notice period. 2–3 months before: begin NSSF withdrawal application (takes 2–4 months to process). 1–2 months before: file tax clearance application at KRA, begin closing utilities and subscriptions. 2–4 weeks before: conduct final rental inspection, transfer or close bank account (or arrange non-resident management). Final week: export vehicle or complete sale, collect NSSF if processed, obtain TCC, cancel Alien Card.
Deregistration
Kenya has no mandatory address deregistration for departing expats. However: cancel your Alien Card / Alien Registration Certificate with Department of Immigration if appropriate. Notify your employer for payroll and NSSF/SHA deregistration. Cancel your work permit (employer-sponsored) by notifying the immigration department. Cancel your KRA PIN registration as non-resident (update your residency status on iTax — itax.kra.go.ke) to avoid continued filing obligations. Notify the NTSA if you are selling or exporting your vehicle.
Tax clearance
Obtain a Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) from KRA before departure if you have significant tax affairs. File a final income tax return for the period you were in Kenya (due 30 June of the following year). Ensure all PAYE, VAT (if registered), and any other tax obligations are settled. Outstanding KRA debts may complicate any future re-entry or dealings with Kenya. Download your tax compliance status from iTax as evidence of good standing.
Pension portability
NSSF: You can apply for an early withdrawal of your NSSF balance when leaving Kenya permanently. Apply at NSSF offices with your departure documentation, resignation letter, and NSSF card. Processing: 2–4 months. Alternatively, leave the funds invested until retirement age (60–65) — the NSSF will pay out internationally if you provide bank details. Check totalization agreements between Kenya and your home country. Employer occupational pension schemes: follow your scheme rules for portability or transfer.
Health insurance
SHA (Social Health Authority): contributions cease when you leave formal employment. You may retain your SHA card and benefits for a period (up to 60 days after last contribution) but eventually coverage lapses. Cancel your SHA registration by notifying SHA offices or through the employer payroll termination process. Private health insurance: cancel before leaving or convert to an international plan if you are moving to another country where the insurer also operates. AMREF Flying Doctors: cancel membership directly with AMREF.
Bank account
You may keep your Kenyan bank account open after leaving — useful for receiving any final payments, rental income, or managing residual Kenya affairs. Inform your bank of your new address and non-resident status. Note: your account may be subject to non-resident withholding tax on interest. If closing the account, ensure all automatic M-Pesa payments and standing orders are cancelled first. Transfer remaining balance via international wire transfer (SWIFT) to your new country bank account.
Utilities
Cancel Kenya Power (KPLC) account — visit a service centre or submit final meter reading. Collect any final refund on prepaid meter credit. Cancel water utility account. Cancel internet/broadband subscription (Safaricom Home Fibre, Zuku — typically 30 days notice required). Cancel M-Pesa subscription services and automatic deductions. Transfer or cancel your Safaricom/Airtel line — keep the Safaricom number as long as useful (it may hold M-Pesa balance).
Rental contract
Give the required notice period (typically 1–2 months as stated in your lease) in writing to your landlord. Conduct a move-out inspection with the landlord or property manager. Document the property condition with photos. Return all keys, access cards, and gate remotes. Request your deposit return within the agreed period. Settle any outstanding service charges, utility bills, or estate fees before departing.
