Banking in Luxembourg

Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.

Luxembourg is one of the world's leading international banking and financial services centres — home to over 120 banks from more than 30 countries. Despite this, banking for ordinary residents is relatively straightforward. The dominant retail banks are Spuerkeess (BCEE — the state savings bank, most accessible for newcomers), BGL BNP Paribas, ING Luxembourg, Raiffeisen, and Banque de Luxembourg. Opening a bank account is generally easier than in many EU countries — Luxembourg banks are accustomed to serving a highly mobile international population. Eurozone country: all accounts hold EUR, SEPA transfers within the EU are free, and euro payments are standard. Luxembourg IBAN format: LU followed by 20 characters.

Payment culture

Luxembourg is card-friendly and moving increasingly cashless. Visa and Mastercard contactless payments are universally accepted. Bancontact (Belgian debit system) is also common given the large Belgian cross-border commuter community. Luxembourg's own payment culture is efficient and professional. Bank transfers (virements) are standard for rent, utilities, and supplier payments. Standing orders (domiciliations) are used for recurring bills. PayPal is widely used for online purchases. SEPA credit transfers between EU accounts are free. Cash is less common than in neighbouring Germany but still used at markets and small vendors. Note: Luxembourg has very little equivalent to Denmark's MobilePay — peer-to-peer payments typically use bank transfers, Revolut, or PayPal rather than a dedicated local app.

Cash access

ATMs (distributeurs automatiques de billets — DAB) are widely available at all banks, shopping centres, and petrol stations throughout Luxembourg. No ATM usage fees for EU cards from Luxembourg banks within the SEPA zone. 24h ATMs at Luxembourg City central station, shopping centres, and hospitals. Cash increasingly less necessary — most Luxembourg businesses accept cards. The Luxembourg border areas have ATMs on both sides, but rates and fees from Luxembourg bank ATMs are typically best.

BPLS / Banque Centrale du Luxembourg credit information

Luxembourg does not have a single dominant credit bureau like the Danish RKI or UK's Equifax/Experian. Banks conduct their own creditworthiness assessments. The Banque Centrale du Luxembourg maintains information on outstanding credit but this is primarily for bank-to-bank reporting. For mortgage applications, banks review your income, employment stability, existing debts, and payment history.

Free annual check: No dedicated free consumer credit check service — request your file from Banque Centrale du Luxembourg or your bank directly.

As a new arrival with no Luxembourg credit history, you have a neutral (not negative) starting position. Banks focus more on your income, employment contract (CDI is preferred over CDD), and SECU affiliation than on credit scores. Build history by paying all bills on time and maintaining accounts in good standing. For mortgages, demonstrating 2+ years of stable Luxembourg employment and income greatly helps.

International transfers

SEPA transfers within EU/EEA countries are free (same-day or next-day). For non-SEPA international transfers (USD, GBP, CHF, non-EU currencies): use Wise for best rates and lowest fees — typically 0.4–0.7% vs. bank rates of 2–4%. Luxembourg banks charge €15–30+ per international SWIFT wire. Revolut provides excellent international transfer rates. For large amounts (salaries, property purchases), compare multiple providers.
