LuxTrust
LuxTrust is Luxembourg's national digital authentication and electronic signature system, operated by LuxTrust S.A. (a public-private company). It provides legally recognised electronic identity verification, secure login to government portals, and qualified electronic signatures. Required to access MyGuichet.lu and most Luxembourg e-government services. Three product variants: LuxTrust Mobile app (smartphone-based), LuxTrust Stick (USB hardware key), and LuxTrust Smart Card (physical smart card with reader).
How to get it: 1. Obtain your numéro national from your commune registration. 2. Apply for LuxTrust via luxtrust.lu — online activation possible for some situations, or in-person at a LuxTrust registration point (at some communes, banks, and POST Luxembourg offices). 3. You receive your LuxTrust credentials (activation code by post). 4. Activate via the LuxTrust portal. 5. Download the LuxTrust Mobile app (iOS/Android) for the most convenient authentication method. Note: requires numéro national — you cannot get LuxTrust without it.
E-Government Portal
https://guichet.luMyGuichet.lu (guichet.lu) is Luxembourg's comprehensive e-government portal, covering the vast majority of interactions with public authorities. The portal is available in French, German, Luxembourgish, and English (partial English). LuxTrust authentication is required for all authenticated services. The portal is modern and generally well-designed — a genuine digital transformation success for Luxembourg's public administration. Physical visits to government offices are increasingly replaced by online processes, though some acts still require in-person attendance (first commune registration, notarial acts, biometric registration).

Luxembourg has made significant digital transformation progress. The combination of LuxTrust + MyGuichet.lu covers most administrative needs online. However, some important processes still require physical attendance: first commune registration (must appear in person with original documents), biometric data for residence permits (photo and fingerprints taken in person), notarial acts (by law, must be signed in person before a notary). The government has a strong e-Luxembourg strategy and new services are regularly digitalised. Note that many official documents and communications are still in French or German — English language support on government portals is partial. If you do not read French or German, use Google Translate on digital forms but verify important details with a professional.
