✈️ Visa-Free Access
EU/EEA/Swiss citizens can live and work in Luxembourg without any visa or work permit. They must register at their commune within 8 days. Citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, UK (post-Brexit), and most Western nations can visit Luxembourg visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. For stays beyond 90 days or to work, an appropriate permit is required. Luxembourg is a Schengen member — no border controls with France, Belgium, and Germany, making it unique as a country where most residents cross multiple international borders daily without any documentation check.
All immigration to Luxembourg is managed by the Direction de l'Immigration (Ministère des Affaires étrangères et Européennes). Applications for non-EU nationals are submitted online via guichet.lu or in person at the Direction de l'Immigration (9, rue du Labrador, Luxembourg City). Luxembourg is a Schengen member — no passport control at borders with France, Belgium, and Germany. For non-EU applicants, the process requires applying BEFORE entering Luxembourg on the basis of a permit — do not arrive and then apply. Luxembourg's immigration rules are relatively generous compared to some EU countries for skilled workers — the country actively needs skilled labour given its small domestic workforce relative to its economic output. The Direction de l'Immigration website (guichet.lu) has all forms and instructions in French, German, and English.
EU Right of Residence (Registration)
EU/EEA/Swiss citizens staying in Luxembourg for more than 3 months for work, study, self-employment, or self-sufficiency.
Certificat d'enregistrement issued same day or within a few days at the commune administration.

Non-EU/EEA nationals with a job offer in Luxembourg. Requires employer sponsorship — employer must demonstrate no suitable EU candidate was available (labour market test), unless exempt.
3–6 months. Apply to the Direction de l'Immigration BEFORE arriving in Luxembourg.

No Dedicated Digital Nomad Visa (Luxembourg)
Digital NomadLuxembourg has no dedicated digital nomad visa as of 2026. EU/EEA citizens can live and work remotely in Luxembourg freely under free movement rights — register at the commune within 8 days. Non-EU remote workers may explore the Autorisation de séjour — Travailleur indépendant (self-employed permit) if they can demonstrate genuine self-employed economic activity. A long-stay visa under "private reasons" (raisons privées) is theoretically possible with proof of approximately €2,000–3,000/month stable income, but is not a formal digital nomad pathway.
EU/EEA registration: same day or within a few days at the commune. Non-EU self-employed: 3–6 months at Direction de l'Immigration.
