Nepal (NP)
Nepal is a landlocked Himalayan nation between India and China, home to eight of the world's ten highest peaks including Mount Everest (8,849m).
Insurance Guide
Which insurances you actually need in Nepal, prioritised.
Insurance for Nepal should be built around private healthcare, evacuation, road risk, earthquake, trekking and income protection. Local policies are useful but international cover is often needed for adequate medical and evacuation limits.
Legally Mandatory
- - Motor vehicle third-party insurance — mandatory under the Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act 2049 for all vehicles
- - Employer social security and work-injury contributions where applicable under Nepal Labour Act
International health and evacuation
Private healthcare, evacuation to India, Thailand, Singapore or home country, and sometimes helicopter rescue.
Who needs it: All expats
Annual cost: USD 800–4,000+ depending on age, cover level and evacuation limit
Must explicitly cover Nepal and trekking altitude if relevant. Check altitude ceiling (minimum 4,500m for Everest Base Camp area) and whether helicopter rescue is covered directly.
Trekking and adventure rescue insurance
Trip interruption, helicopter evacuation and mountain rescue for trekkers and field staff.
Who needs it: Trekkers, field workers, altitude workers and visitors on major trails
Annual cost: USD 100–800+ depending on altitude limit and duration
Key distinction: World Nomads and many travel policies cover medical transport once in the helicopter, but exclude the search-and-rescue dispatch operation itself. Helicopter rescue from above 5,000m can cost USD 6,000–10,000+. Verify the insurer pays the helicopter operator directly.
Motor insurance
Third-party liability (mandatory) and optional comprehensive vehicle cover.
Who needs it: Drivers and vehicle owners
Annual cost: NPR 3,000–30,000+ depending on vehicle type and insured value
Driving risk is high — mountain roads, monsoon conditions and pedestrian traffic make comprehensive cover strongly advisable.
Home contents and earthquake insurance
Household goods against theft, fire, water damage and earthquake (a significant Nepal risk).
Who needs it: Renters with high-value, imported or remote-work equipment
Annual cost: NPR 10,000–80,000+ depending on insured value
The 2015 earthquake destroyed many rental properties. Check earthquake and water damage wording explicitly.
Life and disability insurance
Income replacement and family financial protection after death or long-term disability.
Who needs it: Families and single-income households
Annual cost: Age and cover dependent
Coordinate beneficiary designation with your home-country estate planning.
Comparison sites
Get evacuation wording in writing — confirm altitude ceiling, whether helicopter rescue is directly paid to the operator and that Nepal trekking is not excluded.
Check altitude limits: most standard travel policies cover to 4,000m or less, but Everest Base Camp sits at 5,364m.
Keep insurer emergency number offline — connectivity is unreliable in mountain areas.
Do not rely on credit-card travel cover for Nepal fieldwork or high-altitude trekking.
