Learning the Language in Nepal
Courses, certifications, funding, and online resources to reach fluency.
Nepali is the practical language for daily life, government counters, landlords, drivers, field visits and market negotiation. English works in most professional settings, international schools, major hospitals and some restaurants, but Nepali proficiency transforms quality of life and safety outside Kathmandu. Nepali uses the Devanagari script (shared with Hindi), which is worth learning gradually — even recognising numbers on buses and price tags helps significantly. Expect 3–6 months of regular study to reach comfortable survival level; professional working proficiency takes 2–3 years of sustained effort. Note: Duolingo does not offer Nepali as of 2026; NepaliGo (nepaligo.com) is the best free structured alternative.

Practical Tips
-
Learn numbers and directions in the first week — essential for taxis, rickshaws and market bargaining in Kathmandu and beyond.
-
Practise with your driver or domestic staff using structured phrase cards; they are typically patient and enjoy language exchange.
-
Use the formal pronoun tapai (तपाई) consistently before colleagues invite you to use timi (तिमी) — tone matters enormously.
-
Learn Devanagari numbers first — recognising bus route numbers and prices on market boards saves significant daily frustration.
-
Download Google Translate Nepali language pack for offline use — essential for areas outside Kathmandu Valley mobile data coverage.
-
Do not rely only on Kathmandu English — outside Ring Road and tourist zones, Nepali is indispensable for safety and navigation.
-
Record yourself speaking Nepali monthly; the tones and script are genuinely challenging and hearing your progress is highly motivating.
