Social Security in Nepal
Benefits, contributions, and how the system works for expats.
Nepal social protection for formal private employees centres on the Social Security Fund (SSF), with a 31% total contribution. Coverage and portability are key expat due-diligence issues. Self-employed and informal workers have limited public coverage.

Contribution Overview
Standard SSF contribution is 31% of basic salary: 11% employee and 20% employer. The contribution is calculated on basic salary, not gross salary. Contributions are deposited monthly by the 15th of the following Nepali month. Self-employed people are not automatically enrolled and must manage their own retirement savings. International Social Security Agreements
Nepal has limited social-security totalisation arrangements. There is no comprehensive bilateral network comparable to EU coordination. Home-country pension contributions may need voluntary continuation during Nepal assignment. Confirm with your home-country pension authority before discontinuing contributions.
Clarify whether your salary package is calculated on gross, basic, allowances and SSF separately. Foreign workers need written advice on withdrawal and portability when leaving Nepal. Keep payslips, SSF statements and tax records; they become essential for pension, benefits and departure processes.
