Spanish (Castellano) is the single most decisive integration factor for expats in Spain — employers, landlords, neighbours, doctors and all public administration operate in Spanish. Catalan (Barcelona, Valencia as Valenciano, Baleares), Euskera (País Vasco), and Galego (Galicia) are co-official regional languages and can be essential for public-sector jobs or schools in those regions. The good news: Spain has strong language infrastructure: DELE (Instituto Cervantes) is the world's most-recognised Spanish certificate; CCSE is mandatory for citizenship; Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas (EOI) offer state-subsidised courses in every province; and free regional-language programmes are fully funded in Catalonia, País Vasco and Galicia. With consistent study most expats reach B2 (job-ready) in 12–18 months.
No nationwide mandatory integration course
Spain does NOT have a mandatory federal integration language course. However: (1) for arraigo social visa (3-year residency for undocumented migrants), B1 Spanish + "Informe de Integración Social" from Ayuntamiento is required; (2) for Spanish citizenship, CCSE + DELE A2+ tests are mandatory; (3) Catalonia, País Vasco and Galicia run free regional-language integration programmes with high take-up by new residents. The CEPIs (Centros de Participación e Integración de Inmigrantes) in Madrid and similar CCAA centres offer free Spanish courses for immigrants.
CEPIs (Madrid) and similar CCAA immigrant-integration courses: free. Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas (EOI): ~€100–200/year for full-time Spanish course. Private language schools: €200–500/month. Free municipal courses often run by Cruz Roja Española, Cáritas, and immigrant associations.
CEPI courses: flexible, typically A1→B1 over 6–12 months (2–4 sessions/week). EOI: full academic year per level (150 hours).
Prepares learners for DELE certification (Instituto Cervantes). Achievement certificates from CEPI/CCAA count as "documentación de integración" for arraigo visas and citizenship.
Madrid CEPIs: register at Consejería de Familia, Juventud y Asuntos Sociales. Cataluña: Consorci per a la Normalització Lingüística (CPNL) — free Catalan courses. País Vasco: HABE — free Euskera courses. Galicia: Secretaría Xeral de Política Lingüística — free Galego courses. For Spanish only: EOI enrollment opens June/July each year for September start. Bring: NIE/TIE + empadronamiento + passport + prior certificates if any.
Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas (EOI) — Public Language Schools
Spain's 300+ Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas are state-funded language schools present in every province. Although designed primarily for Spanish citizens learning foreign languages, they also offer "Español para Extranjeros" at all levels A1–C2. EOI certifications are officially recognised and cheaper than DELE. Waiting lists in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia can be long — apply during June registration window. EOI A Distancia (That's English for Spanish→English) also has Spanish courses. In addition, CEPIs (Madrid), CPNL (Cataluña), HABE (País Vasco), Secretaría Xeral de Política Lingüística (Galicia) run free regional + Spanish courses targeting migrants. Many Ayuntamientos fund local free Spanish classes through Cruz Roja, Cáritas, and asociaciones de vecinos.
EOI: 16+ years old, no nationality requirement. Applications open in June via each CCAA's education portal — spots allocated by lottery in oversubscribed schools. CEPI/CPNL/HABE: open to migrants with NIE/TIE + empadronamiento. Cruz Roja / Cáritas: free courses for socially vulnerable migrants with no documentation requirement.
EOI: ~€100–200/year tuition + €30–50 matrícula + books. CEPI Madrid: free. CPNL Catalonia: free basic courses, €40 for intermediate. HABE: free for Euskera. Cruz Roja/Cáritas: free. Private schools: €200–600/month.
EOI: register in June for September start via your CCAA education portal (e.g., Madrid "EducaMadrid", Cataluña "Gencat", Andalucía "Junta de Andalucía"). Bring: DNI/NIE, empadronamiento, academic certificate for placement test. CPNL Catalonia: cpnl.cat, year-round rolling enrolment. HABE: habe.euskadi.eus. CEPI Madrid: comunidad.madrid/servicios/asuntos-sociales/centros-participacion-integracion-inmigrantes-cepi.
Language Levels — What Each Means
Can introduce yourself, ask basic questions, handle very simple predictable interactions.
Required for: Entry-point for most courses. Useful for basic daily survival. Not sufficient for most visa or job purposes. Some non-lucrative visa applications accept A1 as basic integration evidence.
Elementary. Can handle simple routine tasks, describe family and immediate surroundings, understand frequently-used expressions.
Required for: MANDATORY for Spanish citizenship (nacionalidad por residencia) — pass the DELE A2. Some entry-level jobs in hospitality/tourism. Starting point for serious professional Spanish.
Threshold. Can handle most situations while travelling, describe experiences + dreams, give brief reasons for opinions. Can follow standard spoken Spanish if clear.
Required for: Arraigo social + Arraigo laboral visas (with Informe de Integración). Basic job market access especially in tourist regions. Many autónomo registrations work at B1. Required for Spanish public-service ordinary-access exams (oposiciones básicas).
Upper intermediate. Can understand main ideas of complex text, interact with fluency, produce detailed text on wide range of subjects.
Required for: Most professional employment. University admission in Spanish. Healthcare assistant, administrative, customer service roles. Mid-career professional conversations. Homologación of foreign degrees.
Advanced. Can understand demanding longer texts and recognise implicit meaning. Flexibly and effectively uses language for social, academic, professional purposes.
Required for: Most university admissions. Homologación of medical/legal/engineering degrees. Senior professional roles. Teaching positions. Oposiciones técnicas + A2/A1 grades in public administration. Catalonia: CPNL C1 required for teachers.
Mastery/near-native. Expresses self spontaneously, fluently, precisely. Understands virtually everything read or heard.
Required for: Translation + interpretation careers. Some doctoral programmes. Editorial + literary professions. Top oposiciones. Not required for general life or work but opens elite career paths.

Speak Spanish from day ONE, however badly. Spanish people are enthusiastic and patient with any effort — the "Español de guiri" accent is welcomed.

Peninsular Spanish (España) differs from Latin American Spanish in pronunciation (z/c seseo vs ceceo, vosotros vs ustedes). Decide early which variant to focus on — in Spain obviously Peninsular.
