Finding lawyers, accountants, doctors and other professionals in Spain.

Spain’s professional services market is well-organised around regulated Colegios Profesionales (professional chambers). Always verify a provider is "colegiado" (member of the relevant chamber) before paying — this is your consumer protection. For most expats, a gestoría handles routine paperwork and a lawyer is called only for legal disputes or complex immigration. Your home contents insurance may include defensa jurídica (legal defence coverage); check your policy.

Language options: English-speaking professionals are plentiful in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga and the Costa del Sol. In smaller cities English support is rarer. French and German speakers are common in Barcelona, Madrid and the Balearic/Canary Islands. Always clarify the language of service before engagement.

Gestoría / Gestor Administrativo

Autónomo monthly accounting + quarterly filings: €40–80/month. Annual Renta: €60–150. Company setup (SL): €400–1,000 fee (plus notary + Registro Mercantil).

💡 Unique to Spain: a gestor is a one-stop administrative intermediary combining tax advisor, paralegal and immigration facilitator. For new arrivals, a good gestor will handle NIE, empadronamiento, Seguridad Social and Hacienda registrations as a package. Worth every euro for your first 6–12 months.

Immigration Lawyer (Abogado especialista en Extranjería)

Initial consultation: €90–200. Full visa application (Digital Nomad / Golden / NLV / HQP): €900–2,500 including all paperwork. Appeals / recursos: €500–1,500.

💡 Essential for denegaciones (visa denials), appeals, family reunion, citizenship by residence, and complex cases. Lawyers have standing to represent you in contentious-administrative proceedings; gestores do not. Check if your lawyer is colegiado (licensed) and practising in the right colegio.

Asesor Fiscal (Tax Advisor)

€200–500 for annual Renta (expat with complex international income). €80–180/hour for consultations. €500–1,500 for Ley Beckham application.

💡 Different from a gestor: asesor fiscal specialises in tax strategy, not day-to-day filings. Use for Modelo 720 (foreign assets declaration), Ley Beckham applications, international double-taxation treaty analysis, exit tax (impuesto de salida) planning, inheritance structuring.

Notario (Notary)

Property purchase €300,000: €600–900 notary + €300–500 Registro de la Propiedad. Power of attorney (poder notarial): €60–120. Will (testamento abierto): €50–90. Company incorporation (SL): €200–400.

How to find: Consejo General del Notariado (notariado.org). Choose any notary (they are a regulated profession and fees are set by law — not negotiable).

💡 Notaries are public officials with mandatory roles in property transactions, wills, power of attorney, company incorporations, marriages. Their fees are tariffed nationally. You can (and should) request a draft for review before signing. Notaries are required to verbally explain content in Spanish — bring a sworn interpreter if you don’t understand (your right under Art. 201 Reglamento Notarial).

Abogado Laboralista (Employment Lawyer)

Initial consultation: €80–180. Unfair dismissal (despido improcedente) claim: €800–3,000 depending on complexity. Pact-style mediation / conciliación SMAC: €300–1,000.

How to find: Colegio de Abogados, filter Derecho Laboral / Social. CGT, CCOO, and UGT trade unions also provide legal services to members.

💡 Spanish labour law is strongly pro-worker. Despido improcedente gets 33 days per year of service severance (capped 24 months). Always go to conciliación at SMAC (free, state-mediated) within 20 business days of dismissal. Trade union legal help is free for members.
