Recycling & Waste in Spain

Spain has a well-developed but uneven recycling system, regulated by Ley 7/2022 de Residuos y Suelos Contaminados (transposing EU Directive 2018/851) and the Real Decreto 1055/2022 on envases. Waste management is municipal (Ayuntamiento), so exact rules vary by city. Separation is now mandatory nationwide: organic waste (marrón) became compulsory in all municipalities of 5,000+ by Jan 2024. Ecoembes manages yellow/blue container systems; Ecovidrio handles glass. There is no national deposit-return system for most drinks (SDDR mandatory deadline November 2026; operator authorisation underway, full rollout expected 2027 or later).

Sistema de Depósito, Devolución y Retorno (SDDR) — postponed to 2029 — Bottle Deposit System
Spain does NOT currently have a nationwide deposit-return scheme. Spain missed its 70% separate collection target in 2023 (achieving 41.3%), which triggered a legal obligation under Ley 7/2022 to implement a national SDDR — but the government officially postponed the nationwide SDDR from the original November 2026 target to 2029. A regional pilot in Navarra (June–August 2025) recovered over 150,000 containers at €0.10 per container. Reusable glass (envase retornable) continues for bar/restaurant beer and water — return crate or bottles to receive a deposit refund. Commercial returnable systems: Mahou-San Miguel, Estrella Damm, Heineken España.
National SDDR (when launched, expected 2029): €0.10 per single-use PET/aluminium container anticipated. Bar/restaurant reusable glass (envase retornable): typically €0.10–€0.30 per bottle, €3–10 per crate.
For bar retornables (envase retornable): return empty to any establecimiento of the same brand. National SDDR: not yet operational — expected 2029 or later. Until then: place empty single-use bottles in the yellow container (contenedor amarillo) — no deposit refund.
Special Disposal
Punto Limpio (municipal recycling centre), large-electronics retailer (Media Markt, Carrefour, El Corte Inglés — legally required since RD 110/2015 to accept small RAEE <25cm free without purchase). For large RAEE, retailer must collect old unit free when delivering new equivalent.
Includes phones, laptops, chargers, small appliances, light bulbs (LED, fluorescent), electric toys. Remove batteries first.
Small collection points at supermarkets (Mercadona, Carrefour, Dia, Lidl, El Corte Inglés), bazares, tobacconists, Ayuntamiento offices. Never in contenedor gris.
Both single-use (pilas) and rechargeable (pilas recargables) + car batteries (baterías de automóvil → taller or Punto Limpio). Taping terminals prevents short-circuit.
Punto SIGRE at any farmacia (green box inside pharmacy). Accepts expired medicines, partially used medicines in original packaging. Run by Sistema Integrado de Gestión y Recogida de Envases.
Do NOT dispose in contenedor gris — contaminates water. Blister packs and plastic-only packaging (without pills) can go to contenedor amarillo. Sharps (jeringas): farmacia or hospital; never in household waste.
Punto Limpio (each municipality has one or more). Some cities run a Punto Limpio Móvil (mobile) that tours neighbourhoods on schedule.
Paint (pinturas), thinners (disolventes), motor oil (aceite mineral), pesticides, household chemicals. Never pour down drain.
Contenedor naranja specific for aceite (in some cities — Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Valencia have dedicated street containers) or Punto Limpio. Fill an empty plastic bottle, sealed.
Never pour down sink — severe sewer clogging and marine pollution (1L oil pollutes 1,000 L water). Recycled into biodiesel.
Free municipal collection: book via Ayuntamiento website or phone (Madrid 010, Barcelona 010, etc.). Leave at street kerb only on appointed evening before collection. OR take directly to Punto Limpio.
Never leave on street without booking — fine €750–3,000 for depósito ilegal de residuos. Sofas, mattresses, white goods (electrodomésticos) — many Ayuntamientos collect within 3–7 days of request.
Taller / car dealer on replacement (Signus Ecovalor manages collection). Punto Limpio accepts max 4 tyres/year.
Illegal to dispose in street or open container.
Private contenedor de obra rented from Ayuntamiento-authorised company for DIY work + licence (€30–100/month). Punto Limpio accepts small quantities from private individuals.
Placing escombros in street containers: fine up to €3,000.
Bulk Waste
Muebles y enseres (bulk waste): book free collection from your Ayuntamiento's Servicio de Recogida de Muebles. Call 010 (Madrid/Barcelona/Valencia/Sevilla major cities) or use the Ayuntamiento website. You state address + items; they assign pickup night (usually 3–10 days later). Place on street between 20:00–22:00 the evening before. Items: sofas, armchairs, mattresses, tables, fridges, washing machines, TVs, other white goods. DO NOT leave items on the street without booking — fines €750–3,000 (depósito ilegal de residuos under Ordenanza Municipal). Perfectly usable furniture often picked up by neighbours or collectors before collection van arrives — particularly student-heavy neighbourhoods (Malasaña Madrid, Gràcia Barcelona).
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ! Using contenedor azul for greasy food-stained paper (pizza boxes) — these go to contenedor marrón (organic) or gris (resto).
- ! Throwing light bulbs in contenedor verde glass — they contain mercury/rare gases. Take to Punto Limpio or supermarket RAEE point.
- ! Mixing ceramics/porcelain with glass in contenedor verde — they contaminate glass recycling; should go to contenedor gris.
- ! Discarding medications in contenedor gris — always take expired/unused medicines to Punto SIGRE at farmacia.
- ! Not flattening cardboard boxes — collectors refuse overfull containers; fold/tear to fit.
- ! Discarding electrodomésticos in contenedor gris — illegal under RD 110/2015 on RAEE; take to Punto Limpio or ask retailer to collect.
- ! Not knowing where the nearest contenedor marrón (orgánico) is — check Ayuntamiento map. Since 2024 mandatory in all municipalities >5,000 habitants.
- ! Using the local park bin for household waste — fine €100–300.
Fines & Enforcement
Incorrect waste disposal is punishable under Ley 7/2022 and municipal ordenanzas. Typical fines: minor infractions (wrong bin, overflow) €75–300; serious (abandoning furniture without booking, dumping hazardous) €750–3,000; very serious (industrial-scale or hazardous fly-tipping) up to €45,000 or criminal charges. Most Ayuntamientos first issue an apercibimiento (warning) for household-scale mistakes. Recurring violations go to your NIF/NIE or to the building's comunidad de vecinos as a shared fine. Bilbao, Barcelona, Madrid and Sevilla are particularly strict.
Practical Tips
- → Download your Ayuntamiento's waste app — Madrid BasuraCero, Barcelona RecicliApp, Valencia Residuos, Sevilla Lipasam — shows nearest containers + collection calendar + Punto Limpio locations.
- → Punto Limpio opening hours typically Mon–Sat 8:00–20:00, some Sunday mornings. Bring NIE/TIE + proof of address on first visit.
- → Don't throw glass into contenedor verde at night in quiet neighbourhoods — noise regulations (usually 22:00–08:00 prohibited in many cities).
- → Mobile Punto Limpio (Puntos Limpios Móviles) tour residential streets on fixed schedule; great for a bag of mixed hazardous items.
- → Your comunidad de vecinos may charge via tasa de basuras on IBI or as separate bill — basura is not free (typically €80–150/year).
- → Ecoembes (yellow/blue), Ecovidrio (green) and SIGRE (medicines) run educational programmes — check websites for neighbourhood workshops.
- → Apps like "Too Good To Go" + "Reciclos" (Ecoembes) gamify recycling — earn vouchers for confirming bin disposal.
