Eligibility
Tanzania issues three classes of residence permit, all valid for 2 years and renewable. Class A: for investors and business operators with qualifying assets of USD 300,000 or more; Class B: for skilled professionals and employees sponsored by a registered Tanzanian employer or organisation; Class C: for students, retirees, volunteers, religious workers and other non-employment categories. The Real Estate Investor Permit, introduced in recent immigration reforms, provides residence for property investors with a qualifying investment of USD 100,000 or more. Tanzania does not operate a simple points-based permanent-residency track for ordinary expats.

Tanzanian Citizenship by Naturalisation
Eligibility
Foreign nationals who have been lawfully resident in Tanzania for a minimum aggregate of 7 years out of the preceding 10 years, including at least 12 months of continuous residence immediately before the application, may apply for naturalisation. Good character, knowledge of Swahili, and intention to continue residing in Tanzania are required. Tanzania does not permit dual citizenship for adults — prior nationality must be renounced.

Citizenship via Marriage to a Tanzanian Citizen (Women Only)
Eligibility
A foreign woman married to a Tanzanian citizen may apply for naturalisation at any time during the marriage — there is no mandatory minimum period of marriage or residence in Tanzania required. The marriage must be legally registered in Tanzania. This accelerated route applies only to women; foreign men married to Tanzanian women must follow the standard 7-year naturalisation route.

No minimum years of marriage or residence are required — the foreign wife may apply at any point during the marriage. Renunciation of prior citizenship is required as Tanzania does not permit adult dual citizenship. Tanzanian Diaspora / Tanzanite Card
Eligibility
Persons of Tanzanian origin — including former Tanzanian citizens who acquired foreign nationality and their descendants — may qualify for diaspora-specific long-stay instruments. The Diaspora Tanzanite Card (a 10-year long-stay card proposed in 2024) is intended to provide a more stable residence basis for the Tanzanian diaspora without requiring renunciation of foreign citizenship.

Dual citizenship is not allowed — Tanzania does not permit dual citizenship for adults. Tanzanian nationals who voluntarily acquire foreign citizenship generally lose their Tanzanian citizenship, and foreign nationals who naturalise as Tanzanian must renounce their prior citizenship. Exception: a Tanzanian child born abroad who obtained the citizenship of the country of birth may retain dual citizenship until age 21, at which point one citizenship must be chosen. Do not naturalise elsewhere or in Tanzania without fully understanding the loss-of-citizenship consequences in both countries.
