Tanzania (TZ)
East African expat base with Swahili-English daily life, Indian Ocean access, major safari and NGO sectors, growing mining and energy work, and relatively low local costs offset by permit, insurance, school, and hard-currency housing expenses.
Bringing Pets to Tanzania
Requirements, costs and process for relocating with your pets.
Vaccinations
Restricted Breeds
Plus Airline restrictions and landlord/compound rules matter more than a simple national breed list; confirm before booking.
💰 Costs
Expect USD 300-1,500+ per pet for vet documents, crates, import permit support, airline fees, broker/agent, and destination handling; complex routings cost more.
🐕 Dog Tax / Registration
No national annual dog tax, but landlords, compounds, and local authorities may impose rules or fees.
Register with a reputable vet in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Moshi, or Zanzibar immediately after arrival. Ask about emergency care and evacuation options for serious cases.
📋 Relocation Process
Start 2-3 months before travel. Microchip, vaccinate, obtain rabies certificate, secure veterinary health certificate, apply for import permission through livestock/veterinary channels or a relocation agent, confirm airline routing, and arrange arrival clearance.
Tanzania has rabies risk. Keep pets vaccinated, avoid contact with stray dogs/cats/monkeys, and ensure housing allows animals in writing before paying a deposit.
