Thai is not strictly required for every expat job, but it changes daily life dramatically. Basic Thai helps with taxis, markets, landlords, clinics, police reports, immigration offices, domestic workers and neighbours. The challenge is not only vocabulary: Thai is tonal, uses its own script and has polite particles, hierarchy and indirect phrasing. A practical 2026 expat target is survival Thai in 30 days, A1/A2 conversational Thai in 6 months and reading basics within the first year if staying long-term.
No national integration-course requirement
Thailand does not require a mandatory integration course for most visas. Thai language study is optional for work, retirement, DTV and family routes, though education visas must involve real attendance and school compliance.
Community classes can be free or donation-based. Private group Thai classes often cost THB 3,000-9,000 per module; one-to-one tutors commonly range from THB 300-1,200 per hour depending on city and teacher.
Survival modules often run 20-40 hours. A serious learner can reach simple conversation in 3-6 months with weekly classes plus daily listening. Reading Thai script usually needs a dedicated 20-40 hour push.
Outcome depends on learner goal: taxi/market Thai, workplace Thai, reading signs, partner/family communication, or formal Thai literacy. There is no single required certificate for ordinary residence.
Use language schools, university extension programs, private tutors, online tutors or community groups. If using an education visa, verify the school licence, attendance rules and immigration reporting obligations.
University and community Thai programs
Thai universities and cultural institutions offer structured Thai courses for foreigners, especially in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. These are not universal government-funded integration courses, but they are often more rigorous than casual private lessons.
Open to foreign residents, students and sometimes tourists depending on course. Visa-supporting programs require stricter enrolment, attendance and immigration documentation.
Short university modules may cost THB 5,000-20,000+. Full visa-supporting study packages cost more and should be checked carefully for legitimacy.
Apply directly with the university/language centre. Prepare passport, visa status, address, photo and placement-test information if you have prior Thai.
Language Levels — What Each Means
Greetings, numbers, directions, food, taxi phrases, politeness and emergency words.
Required for: First month daily life.
Simple conversations about home, shopping, appointments and personal details.
Required for: Landlords, markets, clinics and basic community life.
Can handle routine errands, explain simple problems and understand slow replies.
Required for: Long-stay comfort and fewer misunderstandings.
Can discuss work, family, repairs, health issues and local news in familiar contexts.
Required for: Local teams, Thai-speaking partners/family and regional life outside expat hubs.
Can read signs, menus, addresses, names, medicine labels and simple notices.
Required for: Independent living and official-document confidence.
Can use polite registers, meetings, negotiations and formal written messages.
Required for: Management, sales, government-facing, legal or clinical work.

Funding Your Language Courses
There is no broad public language subsidy for ordinary expats. Funding usually comes from employers, relocation packages, education budgets or self-pay. Negotiate Thai lessons in the relocation package if your role manages Thai staff, deals with authorities or places children in local/bilingual schools.

Learn tones from day one. Retrofitting tones after memorising words incorrectly is painful.

Use polite particles early: khrap/ka changes how strangers respond to you.

Learn address and taxi Thai: soi, thanon, liang sai, khwa, trong pai, lot tit.

Study Thai script earlier than you think. Reading menus, signs and names reduces dependence on transliteration.

Practise listening in noisy real settings. Market Thai, taxi Thai and clinic Thai sound different from teacher Thai.

Do not overuse romanisation. It helps for the first week, then it starts hiding tones, vowels and spelling patterns you need to progress.

If you manage Thai staff, learn softening phrases and hierarchy-sensitive requests. Direct translations from English can sound harsher than intended.
