- ✓ Learn basic Bangla — "Dhonnobad" (thank you), "Ami bujhi na" (I don't understand) and Bangla numbers earn enormous goodwill. Private tutors are cheap and available within a week of arrival.

- ✓ Plan around Dhaka traffic — a 5 km commute can take two hours at rush hour and more before Eid. Build buffer time into every appointment and social plan.

Weekend escapes to Cox's Bazar (world's longest natural beach), Sylhet tea gardens, the Sundarbans mangrove forest, and the Bandarban hill tracts provide significant relief. Cricket is the national obsession — watching Bangladesh national matches with colleagues is one of the most genuine social integration moments available.

Hatirjheel Lake area — a pedestrian and cycling path around the lake in central Dhaka, one of the few genuinely accessible outdoor spaces. Uttara and Bashundhara residential zones have wider streets for early-morning walking and running. Outside Dhaka: Cox's Bazar offers 120 km of uninterrupted beach; Sylhet has tea gardens and the Ratargul swamp forest; Bandarban hill tracts offer serious trekking; the Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage mangrove delta accessible by tour from Khulna.
No widely accessible public swimming pools exist in Dhaka. Expats use club pools (Gulshan Club, American Club), hotel pools with day passes, or pools at ISD and AISD during community events. International school pools occasionally open to community members through parent association events.
Volunteering
Bangladesh is one of the world's most NGO-dense countries — BRAC (the world's largest NGO), Grameen Bank, ASA, and thousands of smaller organisations operate across the country. For expats, the development sector is the most natural volunteering entry point. However, volunteering activities must align with your visa type — most work visas restrict formal activities outside the sponsoring organisation.
