Learning the Language in Bangladesh
Courses, certifications, funding, and online resources to reach fluency.
English works in corporate Dhaka, embassies, major hospitals and international schools, but Bangla makes everyday life safer, cheaper and warmer. Bangla (Bengali) is spoken by the vast majority of the population and is the sole official language. Even basic greetings and numbers dramatically improve interactions with drivers, landlords, market vendors and domestic staff. Learning the Bengali script helps with navigation and signage. Expect 6–12 months of regular study to reach comfortable survival level; professional working proficiency typically takes 3–5 years of sustained effort. Note: Duolingo does not offer Bengali as of 2026.
No mandatory national integration course
Bangladesh has no government-mandated language or integration course for foreign residents or work-permit holders.

Self-funded options (private tutor, Anki, Clozemaster) are low cost relative to the benefit gained.
Practical Tips
-
Learn numbers and directions in the first week — essential for taxis, CNG rides and market bargaining.
-
Save your home and office address in Bangla transliteration on your phone and show it to drivers instead of struggling with pronunciation.
-
Use respectful forms consistently: Aapni (formal) before switching to tumi (informal) with colleagues who invite it.
-
Learn the Bengali script gradually alongside spoken practice — even reading bus numbers and price tags significantly speeds integration.
-
Practice with your driver or domestic staff using structured phrase lists; they are usually patient and appreciate the effort.
-
Download Google Translate Bengali language pack for offline use — menus, signs and labels become instantly navigable.
-
Join expat or NGO community groups in Dhaka — members regularly share tutor recommendations specific to your sector.
