Digital Services
Digital ID, e-government and essential apps in Chile.
ClaveÚnica — Chilean National Digital Identity
ClaveÚnica (Single Key) is Chile's national digital identity credential, managed by the Ministerio Secretaría General de la Presidencia (SEGPRES). It provides a single login for all Chilean government services — replacing the need for separate usernames/passwords for SII (tax), FONASA (health), Servicio Nacional de Migraciones (immigration), AFP (pension), Registro Civil, and hundreds of other platforms. Functionally equivalent to Germany's BundID or Estonia's digital identity system. For expats, ClaveÚnica is essential for managing virtually all official Chilean matters online.
How to get it: Obtain ClaveÚnica in person at any Registro Civil office with your cédula de identidad para extranjeros (foreign ID card). Cannot be obtained without the cédula — you must first have your cédula from the Registro Civil after visa approval. At the Registro Civil: present cédula + valid email address — the oficinista creates your ClaveÚnica account on the spot. You receive an activation link by email. Also activatable at some public service offices and via validación de identidad (identity verification) at select partner institutions. Processing time: 10–30 minutes. Once activated, manage at claveunica.gob.cl.
E-Government Portal
https://www.chileatiende.clClaveÚnica is the master key — activate it before trying to use any government service online. Most services have PDF certificate downloads — save everything. The SII portal (impuestos.cl) is the most comprehensive tax self-service portal in Latin America; most Chilean tax obligations can be managed entirely online. Portal.cl allows SpA company formation in 1 business day for free — a genuinely world-class service. ChileAtiende has an app (ChileAtiende App) that provides appointment booking at government offices and real-time queue management.

Internet and mobile connectivity in Chile is excellent in Santiago and major cities — fibre broadband is widely available. Rural and mountain areas: 4G/5G coverage patchy; Entel has the best rural coverage. For the first 1–2 weeks: a WOM or Claro prepaid SIM (CLP $5,000–15,000) provides immediate data connectivity before a contract SIM is set up. Most banks, government services, and landlords communicate via WhatsApp — a Chilean phone number is practically essential. When using banking apps in Chile: enable biometric authentication for security. Chile has strict data protection regulations under Ley 19.628 (being modernised) — online services are GDPR-adjacent in principle but enforcement is less comprehensive than EU.
