SAG permit: free application but requires advance planning. Veterinary health certificate (in home country): USD $50–150. Approved vet endorsement: USD $50–100. Microchip implantation (if not already done): CLP $20,000–40,000 in Chile, or equivalent in home country. International airline pet transport: USD $150–500+ (cabin) or USD $200–600+ (cargo hold) depending on airline and size. Quarantine: not required if documents are correct. Post-arrival vet registration in Chile: CLP $30,000–80,000 for initial checkup and municipal registration. Annual municipal license (licencia de tenencia): CLP $1,500–8,000 depending on commune. Annual vaccinations and vet visits: CLP $50,000–120,000/year.
🐕 Dog Tax / Registration
Municipal pet license (licencia de tenencia de mascotas) required under Ley 21.020. Cost: CLP $1,500–8,000/year depending on commune. Dogs must wear identification tag (placa de identificación) at all times. Municipal dogcatchers (inspectores) can impound unregistered or unlicensed dogs. Neutered pets: reduced fee in most communes. Register at your municipality (Registro de Mascotas, Ley 21.020) with: pet microchip number, vaccination records, your RUT and cédula.
Chile has a good network of veterinary clinics (veterinarias/clínicas veterinarias) in all major cities. Initial vet registration: bring microchip record, vaccination book (carnet de vacunación), and SAG entry certificate. Vet visits: CLP $20,000–50,000 consultation. Neutering/spaying: CLP $60,000–150,000. Emergency veterinary care: larger cities have 24/7 emergency clinics. Pet food: widely available at supermarkets and dedicated pet stores (PetCo Chile, Happy Pets). Raw feeding is legal. Imported specialty pet food: available via MercadoLibre and Pet stores. Note: heartworm (dirofilaria) prevention is recommended in summer months in coastal and central Chile. Fleas and ticks: year-round prevention recommended, especially for dogs that access parks and green spaces.
📋 Relocation Process
Pre-travel (6–8 weeks before): (1) Ensure your pet has an ISO-standard microchip (15-digit, ISO 11784/11785). (2) Ensure rabies vaccine is current (minimum 30 days before travel, not more than 12 months old). (3) Obtain official health certificate from a licensed veterinarian in your home country — must be issued within 10 days before travel. (4) Have the health certificate endorsed by your country's official veterinary authority (USDA, APHA, DAFF, etc. depending on origin country). (5) Apply for a SAG (Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero, SAG, sag.gob.cl) import permit — downloadable forms on sag.gob.cl under "Ingresos de Mascotas." (6) Obtain sworn Spanish translation of all documents (translated by an official translator). At the border/airport: present all documents at the SAG desk at Arturo Merino Benítez Airport (Terminal 1, international arrivals, SAG inspection area). SAG officers will inspect the pet, review documents, and stamp the import permit. If documents are in order: immediate release, no quarantine. If documents are incomplete: pet held at SAG border facility at your cost until resolved. After arrival: (1) Register your pet with your municipality (Registro de Mascotas under Ley 21.020) within 30 days. (2) Register with a local veterinarian. (3) For restricted breeds: obtain liability insurance and register specifically as a "perro potencialmente peligroso."
Chile is generally pet-friendly in residential neighbourhoods but apartment buildings vary — check your building's reglamento interno before bringing a pet. Many Santiago buildings prohibit large dogs or pets above a certain weight. Ferias libres (street markets) sometimes have informal pet trade — avoid purchasing pets from unregistered sources. The Ley 21.020 (Ley de Tenencia Responsable de Mascotas, 2017) established the framework for pet registration, public leash requirements, and restricted breed regulations — read the full law at bcn.cl. Dogs in public must be on a leash — fines for unleashed dogs in public apply. Dogs are permitted in most parks (parques) but must be leashed; some parks have designated off-leash areas. Dogs are not permitted in supermarkets, pharmacies, or most retail establishments, but many pet-friendly cafés and restaurants exist in Barrio Italia, Bellavista, and Providencia. Easter Island (Rapa Nui): special animal import restrictions apply — importing pets to Easter Island requires additional SAG permits beyond the standard mainland Chile requirements.
