Leaving Chile
How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
Recommended departure timeline for Chile: 3 months before departure: give rental notice, begin utility cancellation, notify employer (Código del Trabajo requires written resignation — "aviso de renuncia"), arrange AFP status review. 2 months before departure: file Operación Renta if due, close or transfer Chilean company, cancel ISAPRE or note FONASA lapse date, begin international bank transfers. 1 month before departure: complete move-out inspection, obtain deposit return or initiate dispute, cancel mobile phone contract, cancel streaming and subscription services (Netflix, Spotify — check billing cycle), obtain FONASA and SII certificates for records. Final week: make final ATM withdrawals, cancel CuentaRUT if desired, download all important documents from SII/ClaveÚnica portal, notify AFP of departure and foreign address. Post-departure: monitor bank account for final credits (tax refund, salary), track AFP balance online, complete home-country address registration at your destination municipality. Key contacts: SII (sii.cl, 22 395 1515), Migraciones (sermig.gob.cl), Superintendencia de Pensiones (spensiones.cl), SERNAC for consumer disputes (800 700 100).
Deregistration
Chile has no formal address deregistration process — there is no mandatory departure notification for leaving residents. Foreigners leaving Chile permanently should: (1) Notify Servicio Nacional de Migraciones (sermig.gob.cl) of your departure — there is no mandatory departure registration, but notifying changes your immigration status record. (2) If you held Residencia Definitiva, you must return to Chile at least once every two years to maintain it — failure to return causes automatic lapse. (3) Cancel any Chilean voter registration (for those with Residencia Definitiva who registered to vote) at the Servicio Electoral (servel.cl). (4) Update your address with SII (sii.cl) and FONASA to a contact address — unread tax correspondence can result in fines. (5) Notify your AFP of your departure and provide a foreign address for future communications about your pension balance.
Tax clearance
Chile does not require a formal tax clearance certificate (certificado de residencia fiscal) for most departing residents. However: (1) Complete your final Operación Renta (annual income tax declaration, due April each year for the prior calendar year) — file via sii.cl with ClaveÚnica before leaving if possible. (2) If you have outstanding SII tax debts, the SII may issue a tax lien (embargo) — check your tax status online at sii.cl before departing. (3) Close your boleta de honorarios account if you were self-employed — notify SII of cessation of activities (cese de actividades) via sii.cl to avoid ongoing obligations. (4) If you own a Chilean company (SpA, EIRL): formally dissolve it via portal.cl or appoint a local administrator before leaving. (5) Obtain a Situación Tributaria certificate from SII confirming no pending obligations — useful for proving Chilean tax residency ended for your home country tax authority. Chile taxes residents on worldwide income; non-residents are only taxed on Chile-source income (impuesto adicional at 35% withholding).
Pension portability
AFP (Administradoras de Fondos de Pensiones) pension accounts in Chile are individual savings accounts — your contributions belong to you and are fully portable. Options for AFP savings when leaving Chile: (1) Leave funds in your AFP account — they continue to accrue investment returns. You can monitor your balance online at spensiones.cl and through your AFP's app indefinitely. (2) Withdraw funds if you have a totalization agreement and are under retirement age — agreement countries include EU member states, USA, Canada, Australia, and others. Contact your AFP (AFP Habitat, AFP Capital, AFP Cuprum, AFP PlanVital, AFP Provida, AFP Uno) directly for the withdrawal process. (3) Transfer to your home-country pension system — possible under totalization agreements. Your AFP will issue a transfer certificate. (4) Receive pension in Chile and transfer internationally when you reach retirement age (women 60, men 65). Key contact: Superintendencia de Pensiones (spensiones.cl), AFP-specific customer service. APV (voluntary pension savings) accounts can be withdrawn with a 15% penalty tax or transferred to another APV provider.
Health insurance
FONASA (public health insurance) membership ends automatically when you cease to be a Chilean resident or employee contributing to the system. Your last month of AFP/FONASA contributions provides coverage for that month. Private ISAPRE plans: notify your ISAPRE in writing of your contract cancellation — ISAPRE contracts require 30 days written notice. After cancellation, you are no longer covered for Chilean healthcare services as a resident. Emergency treatment: non-residents may still access emergency (urgencias) services and be billed at private rates — ensure you have international travel health insurance before departing. FONASA coverage through SpA/EIRL ownership: if you owned a company and paid FONASA as the owner, coverage ends when you cease paying contributions. Obtain a FONASA certificate of contributions (certificado de cotizaciones) for your home country records — available at fonasa.cl with ClaveÚnica.
Bank account
Chilean bank accounts (BancoEstado, Banco de Chile, Santander, etc.) remain open after departure if the balance is maintained and no fees are outstanding. Practical advice: (1) Keep the account open for a period to receive any final tax refunds (devolución de impuestos), salary payments, or AFP transfers. (2) Set up international transfer capability before leaving — Wise or SWIFT transfers from Chilean accounts can be done online. (3) Transfer remaining funds to your destination bank account — TEF transfers within Chile are free and instant; international SWIFT transfers cost CLP $20,000–80,000/transaction. (4) Cancel recurring payments and direct debits (mandatos). (5) Close the account formally in writing after all pending transactions are complete — visit a branch or use the bank's app/website. MACH digital wallet: withdraw any balance before account closure. Wise Chile account: close via the Wise app. Note: CuentaRUT (BancoEstado basic account) is tied to your RUT — it remains on record even if dormant.
Utilities
Cancel or transfer all utility contracts before departure: (1) Electricity (Enel, CGE, Chilquinta): call customer service or use the company's website/app. Provide your departure date and meter reading. Final bill will be sent to a postal address — ensure you provide a reliable address or arrange online billing. Deposit refund (garantía de suministro): request via customer service — processing takes 30–60 days. (2) Gas (Metrogas, Abastible): notify of departure and final meter reading. Request deposit refund. (3) Water (Aguas Andinas, Esval): notify of departure. Landlord typically handles water bills in rental properties. (4) Internet/telephone (Movistar, Entel, VTR, WOM): cancel your contract in writing — Chilean operators have received consumer protection scrutiny for difficult cancellation processes. Use certified letter (carta certificada) or Correos de Chile for documented cancellation if the operator resists. SERNAC (800 700 100) mediates if operators refuse cancellation. (5) Mobile phone contract: confirm contract end date — many Chilean mobile contracts have 12–18 month lock-in periods with early termination penalties.
Rental contract
Terminating a Chilean rental contract (contrato de arrendamiento): (1) Check your contract for the notice period — typically 1–2 months written notice is required. The Código Civil does not prescribe a universal notice period, so it is contract-specific. (2) Provide written notice (carta de aviso de término de contrato) to your landlord — send by registered mail (carta certificada) to create a documented record. (3) Arrange a move-out inspection (entrega del inmueble) with the landlord — document the property condition with photos and a written inspection report. (4) Ensure the property is in the condition specified in the contract — normal wear and tear (deterioro normal) does not justify deposit deductions. (5) Deposit return: typically required within 30 days of moving out — your landlord must provide an itemised accounting of any deductions. Disputes: the Tribunal de Arrendamiento (part of civil courts) handles rental disputes — free consultation at Corporación de Asistencia Judicial (corporacioncaj.cl). UF-indexed contracts: calculate the UF value at departure to confirm deposit return amount. If leaving Chile mid-lease, negotiate a mutual termination agreement (resciliación por mutuo acuerdo) and get it in writing.
