Permanent Residency
Name
Visa R (Resident Visa)
Eligibility
Holders of M (Migrante) visas who have maintained continuous legal residence in Colombia for the required period, plus family members of Colombian nationals, and certain others.
Duration
Indefinite (Visa R is a permanent status). Plastic CE card renewed every 5 years. Must not be absent from Colombia for more than 2 continuous years.
Requirements
- ✓3 continuous years on an M visa (any subcategory)
- ✓No criminal record in Colombia (certificado de antecedentes judiciales)
- ✓Valid passport
- ✓Proof of economic ties or self-sufficiency in Colombia
- ✓All M visa periods must be continuous — significant gaps restart the clock; absence of 1 or more continuous years interrupts the qualifying domicile period for naturalisation
The Visa R grants permanent resident status. You can work freely, own property, and access most services. Differences from full citizenship: cannot vote in presidential elections (but can vote in local elections for foreigners with 5+ years residence in some municipalities), cannot hold certain public offices, cannot obtain a Colombian passport. Alternative fast tracks: spouse of Colombian national (2 years), parent of Colombian national child (any duration), long-term resident with 10+ years (also 5 years).

Citizenship
Name
Naturalización Colombiana (Colombian Naturalisation)
Eligibility
Legal residents who meet the minimum residency requirements and fulfil language, integration, and renunciation-of-prior-citizenship conditions (where applicable).
Duration
Permanent — Colombian citizenship for life. Colombian passport valid 10 years.
Requirements
- ✓5 years continuous legal residence in Colombia (Visa R) — standard path
- ✓Valid Colombian residence (Visa R or equivalent)
- ✓Demonstrate Spanish language proficiency
- ✓Pass test on Colombian history, constitution, and culture (Examen de Conocimiento)
- ✓Colombia does NOT require renunciation of prior citizenship — the 1991 Constitution (Article 96) removed this requirement; however, check your home country's rules as some countries do not permit their nationals to hold dual citizenship
- ✓No criminal record (domestic and international)
- ✓Demonstrate integration and ties to Colombia
- ✓Application via Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (Cancillería)
Colombia allows dual citizenship in most cases. The Constitución de 1991 (Article 96) established that Colombians do not lose their nationality when acquiring another citizenship — and the same principle applies to foreigners who become Colombian: Colombia does not force renunciation if your home country also accepts dual citizenship. Most EU, UK, US, Canadian, and Australasian nationals can hold dual Colombian nationality without renouncing their original citizenship. However, always check your home country's position — some countries (e.g., Singapore) do not allow dual nationality.
Other Routes to Residency & Citizenship
Naturalisation by Marriage to Colombian National
Eligibility
Foreigners married to a Colombian national
Duration / Outcome
2 years continuous legal residence after marriage (not 5 years)
Requirements
- ✓Valid marriage to a Colombian national registered in Colombia
- ✓Registration of marriage at Notaría and Cancillería if performed abroad
- ✓2 years legal residence after marriage date
- ✓No criminal record
- ✓Spanish proficiency and constitutional knowledge test
- ✓Visa R or equivalent legal status
The most common fast-track to Colombian citizenship for foreign spouses. Marriage must be genuine — immigration officials verify. After 2 years, same citizenship application process as general path.
Naturalisation for Spanish Nationals (1-Year Route)
Eligibility
Nationals of Spain only. Spanish nationals can obtain Colombian nationality after 1 year of continuous legal domicile in Colombia.
Duration / Outcome
1 year of continuous legal residence in Colombia (not 5 years)
Requirements
- ✓1 year continuous legal residence/domicile (Visa R or M)
- ✓No criminal record
- ✓Demonstrate domicile and integration
- ✓Spanish proficiency (generally already satisfied)
- ✓Same Cancillería application process
Exclusive 1-year privilege for Spanish nationals under Colombia-Spain bilateral provisions. For all other Iberoamerican/Latin American nationals, the reduced residency is 2 years (see below).
Naturalisation for Latin American and Caribbean Nationals (2-Year Route)
Eligibility
Nationals of all Latin American countries (Mexico, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and others) plus Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Portugal.
Duration / Outcome
2 years of continuous legal residence in Colombia (not 5 years)
Requirements
- ✓2 years continuous legal residence (Visa R or M)
- ✓No criminal record
- ✓Demonstrate domicile and integration
- ✓Spanish proficiency (generally already satisfied)
- ✓Same Cancillería application process
Generous 2-year reduced-residency path for all Iberoamerican/Caribbean nationals (except Spanish nationals who qualify for the 1-year route). Absence of 1+ continuous year interrupts the qualifying period.
Naturalisation — Parent of Colombian National
Eligibility
Foreigners who are parents of a Colombian national (by birth on Colombian soil — ius soli)
Duration / Outcome
No minimum residency period required
Requirements
- ✓Birth certificate of Colombian child (born on Colombian territory)
- ✓Proof of parentage
- ✓Legal residence status in Colombia at time of application
- ✓No criminal record
- ✓Application to Cancillería
Colombia applies ius soli citizenship — any child born on Colombian soil is automatically Colombian. A foreign parent of a Colombian-born child can apply for naturalisation without the standard 5-year wait. This makes Colombia very welcoming for families who have children born here.
By Service to Colombia
Eligibility
Foreigners who have provided outstanding service to Colombia (scientific, cultural, economic, or humanitarian)
Duration / Outcome
By presidential decree — no standard residency requirement
Requirements
- ✓Documented outstanding service to Colombia
- ✓Recommendation from Colombian institution or government body
- ✓Presidential discretion
Extremely rare. Awarded by presidential decree (Carta de Naturaleza by Presidential Declaration). Notable examples include foreign scientists and cultural figures.
🌍 Dual Citizenship
✓
Dual citizenship is allowed — Colombia fully allows dual (or multiple) citizenship. The 1991 Constitution removed the previous requirement to renounce foreign nationality upon becoming Colombian. Colombians who naturalise abroad do not lose their Colombian citizenship. Foreign nationals who naturalise as Colombian do not lose their Colombian status even if their home country does not allow dual citizenship (the renunciation must be completed to the other country's requirements, but Colombia does not make you renounce first). UK, USA, Canada, Australia, EU (most countries), and other major expat nationalities generally allow their citizens to acquire Colombian citizenship while keeping original nationality — always verify with your own consulate. Colombia is one of the most permissive countries globally for dual citizenship.
