Cédula Digital / Cédula de Ciudadanía Digital
Colombia's digital national ID. The physical Cédula de Ciudadanía (for Colombians) or Cédula de Extranjería (CE, for foreign residents) serves as the primary identity document. The CE is issued by Migración Colombia and contains a chip. Colombians also have a digital version of their cédula available in the Mi Identidad app (Registraduría Nacional). For foreigners: the CE is your primary legal ID in all transactions.
How to get it: Cédula de Extranjería (CE): apply at Migración Colombia after your visa is approved. Visit a Migración Colombia office with your passport, visa, and photos. Processing: 15–30 business days. Cost: COP $162,000 (2026). Collect in person. Mi Identidad digital CE: some foreign residents can access a digital version through the Migración Colombia app.
E-Government Portal
https://www.gov.coGOV.CO is the unified gateway to all Colombian government digital services. Most DIAN services require a valid RUT and digital signature certificate (firma electrónica). For foreigners: the NIT (tax number) derived from your CE number is your identifier across all government platforms. Transactions often require a TRM (representación digital) — the digital representation number. Government portals work best on Chrome; many have known compatibility issues with Firefox/Safari.

Nequi
FreeBancolombia's popular digital wallet and neobank. Widely used for P2P transfers, bill payment, mobile top-ups, and small transactions. Send/receive COP for free between Nequi users and to Bancolombia accounts. Open with only a CE/cédula — no salary certificate or credit check. Essential for daily payments including markets and small vendors.
Daviplata
FreeDavivienda bank's free digital wallet. Similar to Nequi — P2P transfers, bill payments, mobile recharges. Heavily used in lower-income communities. Free transactions between Daviplata users.
Rappi
FreeColombia's dominant super-app — food delivery, supermarket delivery, pharmacy delivery, cash delivery (RappiCash — cash brought to your door), restaurant bookings, and more. Bogotá and Medellín coverage is exceptional with 30–60 minute delivery. RappiPay allows digital payments. Founded in Bogotá.
InDriver / Cabify / Uber
FreeRide-hailing apps. Uber operates in Colombia (legal since 2023 regulatory change). Cabify is popular for premium rides. InDriver allows price negotiation with drivers. All are safer alternatives to hailing street taxis. Always use app-based rides — street taxis carry risk of express kidnapping.
DIAN MUISCA (app)
FreeDIAN's platform for tax filings, RUT management, and electronic invoice receipt. Residents with income in Colombia need this for annual declaración de renta. Not a standalone app — accessed via browser at muisca.dian.gov.co but there is a mobile-optimised version.
Merqueo / Tostao / Frubana
FreeOnline grocery and fresh produce delivery apps. Merqueo offers same-day delivery. Tostao is a Colombian café chain with delivery. Alternatives: Rappi Market, Ara Digital (regional), MercadoLibre Colombia for goods.
Sitp Bogotá / Metro Medellín App
FreeBogotá: TuLlave card (Transmilenio + SITP), managed via the TuLlave app for recharging. Medellín: Cívica card for Metro, Metroplús, Metrocable — manageable via the Metro de Medellín app. Transit apps provide real-time route info.
Doctoralia / Doctorhoy
FreeOnline doctor appointment booking platforms. Find Spanish-speaking and English-speaking doctors, dentists, psychologists, and specialists. Book private clinic appointments directly. Very useful for initial healthcare setup before EPS is active.
MercadoLibre Colombia
FreeLatin America's dominant e-commerce platform (similar to Amazon). Used for everything from electronics to furniture, clothing, and second-hand goods. MercadoPago (payment arm) allows online payments. Trusted by Colombians — seller ratings system and buyer protection exist.
Mi Planilla / Aportes en Línea
PaidPlatforms for paying monthly social security contributions (PILA — Planilla Integrada de Liquidación de Aportes) for independent workers (trabajadores independientes). Mandatory if you are an independent contractor in Colombia earning income. Mi Planilla (miplanilla.com) is the most widely used.
Colombia Travel (ProColombia app)
FreeOfficial Colombian tourism app with destination guides, safety tips, and travel recommendations. Good for exploring beyond your home city. Colombia has 60+ UNESCO World Heritage sites and extraordinary biodiversity.
Colombia is one of Latin America's most digitally advanced countries. QR payments (PSE via QR, Nequi QR, Bancolombia QR) are ubiquitous in supermarkets and restaurants. Many government services have been digitalised — DIAN e-invoicing (facturación electrónica) is mandatory for all Colombian businesses since 2021. Tip: download Clever — a Colombian app for utilities payment. Always have internet credit or a data plan — mobile data is affordable (~COP $10,000–40,000/month for unlimited data). Major carriers: Claro (best coverage nationwide), Movistar (good urban), Tigo (value). For expat remittances home: Wise and Remitly have the best rates for COP→foreign currency.
