Czech Republic (CZ)
Czech Republic is a landlocked Central European parliamentary republic of 14 regions, home to the fairy-tale spires of Prague — one of Europe's best-preserved medieval capitals — as well as world-famous Bohemian crystal and glasswork, the birthplace of Pilsner lager, a thriving startup and tech scene anchored in Prague and Brno, and one of the lowest unemployment rates and most stable economies in the EU.
Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Czech Republic.
Czech family policy provides generous support for parents and children. The system includes maternity benefit (peněžitá pomoc v mateřství), parental allowance (rodičovský příspěvek), child allowance (přídavek na dítě), birth grant (porodné), and various tax credits. EU citizens and legal residents with social insurance coverage have access to the same benefits as Czech nationals. Benefits managed by ČSSZ (MPSV for some) and paid through the local Úřad práce or ČSSZ.
Mateřská dovolená / Peněžitá pomoc v mateřství (PPM)
Before birth: Can start 8–6 weeks before expected delivery date (most women choose 6 weeks before). The employee decides when to start, within the allowed window.
After birth: 28 weeks total for one child (37 weeks for multiple births). Typically structured as 6 weeks before birth + 22 weeks after birth. After the 28/37-week maternity period, either parent can take parental leave (rodičovská dovolená) until the child turns 4.
Job protection: Full job protection during mateřská dovolená. Employer cannot terminate the employment during this period. The position (or equivalent) must be available on return. Mateřská dovolená is counted toward employment seniority.
Rodičovská dovolená
Max duration: Until child's 3rd birthday (rodičovská dovolená). Can be extended by agreement with employer up to child's 4th birthday. Either parent (mother or father) can take rodičovská dovolená. Both parents cannot take it simultaneously with the rodičovský příspěvek benefit active for the same child.
Split rules / Elterngeld: Parental leave can be split between mother and father, but only one parent at a time receives rodičovský příspěvek (parental allowance). Parents can alternate but coordination with Úřad práce is required. Father can take paternity leave (otcovská dovolená) of 2 weeks immediately after birth.
Benefits
Rodičovský příspěvek (Parental Allowance)
Total CZK 350,000 per child (CZK 525,000 for multiple births, from January 2024 — increased from CZK 300,000). Parents choose their own monthly amount flexibly until the total is drawn or child turns 4.
Duration: Until total CZK 350,000 is drawn, or until child's 4th birthday — whichever comes first. Flexible monthly amount choice.
Eligibility: Parent (mother or father) who cares for the child in the household. Czech resident. Prior employment/OSVČ history not required for the allowance itself, but affects the monthly maximum. EU citizens with Czech residence eligible.
How to apply: Apply at local Úřad práce (Labour Office) within 3 months of entitlement start. Form: žádost o rodičovský příspěvek. Bring: birth certificate (rodný list), ID, bank account details.
The CZK 350,000 total was increased from CZK 300,000 in January 2024 (which was in turn increased from CZK 220,000 in 2020). Monthly amount is flexible — choose a higher amount if you have prior earnings (up to the monthly maximum based on previous daily assessment base). Low-earning parents with no prior employment history can draw up to CZK 7,600/month.
Peněžitá pomoc v mateřství (PPM — Maternity Benefit)
70% of daily assessment base × days of leave. Based on previous 12 months' earnings.
Duration: 28 weeks (one child) or 37 weeks (multiple births). For fathers/second parent: can take over leave from week 7 after birth.
Eligibility: Must have at least 270 days of health/social insurance participation in the 2 years before maternity leave start. Employed or OSVČ (if paying nemocenské pojištění).
How to apply: Via employer (zaměstnavatel) for employed mothers. OSVČ: apply at ČSSZ directly.
PPM is separate from rodičovský příspěvek. PPM is the replacement income during early maternity leave. OSVČ (self-employed women) must have paid nemocenské pojištění (sickness insurance) for at least 180 days in the prior year to be entitled to PPM.
Porodné (Birth Grant)

Means-tested benefit — not all families qualify. Children adopted under 7 years old also qualify for the birth grant.
Přídavek na dítě (Child Allowance)

Eligibility: Means-tested: family income below 3.4× životní minimum. Czech residents.

Eligibility: Employed parent caring for sick child under 10 years, or dependent family member. Must be enrolled in nemocenské pojištění.
How to apply: Via employer with doctor's confirmation (potvrzení lékaře o ošetřování).
Extended ošetřovné: during extraordinary situations (school/childcare closure) extended provisions apply — check current rules at cssz.cz.
Sick child leave
Ošetřovné (carer's benefit for sick child): up to 9 days per year (16 days for single parents), paid at 60% of daily assessment base by ČSSZ from day 1. Child must be under 10. Confirm with your employer — some companies offer more generous paid sick child arrangements.
Birth registration
Zápis do rodné matriky (birth registration): must be completed at the matriční úřad (registry office) of the municipality where the birth occurred, typically within 7 days. Hospital usually assists with this. Foreign nationals: birth certificate (rodný list) will be issued in Czech; you may also need to register at your home country's embassy/consulate.
Childcare rights
Children aged 5 are entitled to one year of compulsory pre-school education (povinná předškolní docházka) at a free public mateřská škola. Children aged 6+ compulsory school attendance (povinná školní docházka). Parents in Czech Republic have the right to alternating custody (střídavá péče) arrangements following separation — Czech courts tend to favour shared parenting arrangements.
