Czech Republic (CZ)
Czech Republic is a landlocked Central European parliamentary republic of 14 regions, home to the fairy-tale spires of Prague — one of Europe's best-preserved medieval capitals — as well as world-famous Bohemian crystal and glasswork, the birthplace of Pilsner lager, a thriving startup and tech scene anchored in Prague and Brno, and one of the lowest unemployment rates and most stable economies in the EU.
Social Security in Czech Republic
Benefits, contributions, and how the system works for expats.
Czech social security (sociální zabezpečení) is managed primarily by ČSSZ (Česká správa sociálního zabezpečení — Czech Social Security Administration). The system covers pension insurance (důchodové pojištění), sickness insurance (nemocenské pojištění), and employment policy (příspěvek na státní politiku zaměstnanosti). Health insurance (zdravotní pojištění) is separate, managed by zdravotní pojišťovny (health insurance companies). Family benefits and unemployment support are managed by Úřad práce ČR (Labour Office). Czech Republic participates in EU social security coordination (EC 883/2004).
Birth Number / Social Insurance Number
Rodné číslo / IČP (Identifikační číslo pojištěnce)
Czech citizens receive rodné číslo at birth. Foreigners receive an IČP (health insurance identification number) when registering with a zdravotní pojišťovna, or a rodné číslo is assigned when obtaining Czech permanent residence. This number is used for all social security and health insurance purposes.

International Social Security Agreements
Czech Republic participates in EU social security coordination (EC 883/2004) — all EU/EEA insurance periods and contributions combined for eligibility purposes. Czech Republic also has bilateral social security agreements with: USA, Canada, Australia, Ukraine, Turkey, India, South Korea, Japan, and others. Check ČSSZ for the full list of agreements.
ČSSZ ePortál (eportal.cssz.cz) allows online access to your insurance record, pension simulation, and submission of OSVČ annual statements. OSVČ must file annual přehled OSVČ (social and health insurance statement) by May 2 each year. Employees: contributions automatically deducted and submitted by employer. Non-EU expats: contributions paid in Czech Republic are typically creditable toward pension from the first day if a bilateral agreement exists.
