Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Fiji.
Family life in Fiji is community-centred, but expat families need formal documents for dependants, school, birth registration, healthcare and estate planning.
Maternity leave
Before birth: Up to 42 days before the expected birth date (included within the 98-day total entitlement). A medical certificate from a registered doctor or nurse specifying the expected birth date is required.
After birth: 98 consecutive days (14 weeks) total maternity leave under the Employment Relations Act 2007. Up to 42 days may be taken pre-natal; the remainder post-natal. Payment: full normal remuneration for the first 3 births; 50% for the 4th and subsequent births. Eligibility: employed for at least 150 days in aggregate in the 9 months before birth.
Job protection: Pregnancy and maternity protections apply, but foreign workers should align leave with permit validity and employer sponsorship.
Parental and family leave
Max duration: Paternity/family care entitlements are more limited than in Europe and depend on law/contract.
Split rules / Elterngeld: Agree arrangements in writing with employer, especially for remote/island roles.
Benefits
Maternity Benefit (employer-paid, Employment Relations Act 2007)
Full normal remuneration for the first 3 births; 50% of normal remuneration for the 4th and subsequent births
Duration: 98 days (14 weeks) per qualifying birth
Eligibility: Female employees employed for at least 150 aggregate days in the 9 months before the expected birth date. Both private and public sector employees are covered.
How to apply: Provide employer with medical certificate from a registered doctor or nurse confirming expected birth date. Notify employer at least 6–8 weeks before commencing leave. The employer pays the benefit directly — no separate government social security claim.
The 4th-birth limitation to 50% pay is set by the Employment Relations Act. Collective agreements (CBAs) in the public sector and some large employers may provide more generous terms — check your employment contract.
FNPF death/incapacity benefits
Depends on member balance and rules

Eligibility: FNPF members and nominated beneficiaries
How to apply: Through FNPF with member/beneficiary documents
Keep nominations updated after marriage/divorce/children.
Employer family benefits
Varies
Duration: Contract term
Eligibility: Often expat-package dependent

School fees, housing, flights and medical cover are major value items.
Sick child leave
Family-care leave is not as generous or standardised as EU systems. Negotiate flexibility and remote-work options in writing.
Birth registration
Births in Fiji should be registered through Births, Deaths and Marriages/eBDM processes. Confirm citizenship and passport implications for the child.
Childcare rights
Public childcare rights are limited compared with Europe. Secure nursery, nanny or school places before arrival where possible.
