Banking in Greenland

Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.

Greenland uses the Danish krone (DKK) and its banking system is closely tied to Denmark. The critical first step is obtaining a CPR number (Civil Registration) — without it you cannot open a local account, set up MitID digital identity, or sign up for MobilePay. Most expats are employed by public institutions, government bodies, fishing companies, or research organisations, and their employer typically assists with CPR registration. Once you have a CPR number, the process is straightforward. Banking and digital payments in towns like Nuuk, Sisimiut, and Ilulissat are modern; remote settlements have much more limited access.

Payment culture

Greenland is predominantly card-based in all towns and larger settlements. Dankort (the Danish national debit card) and Mastercard/Visa Debit are accepted in virtually every shop, supermarket, and restaurant in Nuuk, Sisimiut, Ilulissat, and other populated centres. MobilePay is the dominant peer-to-peer and small-merchant payment app — used for splitting bills, paying small traders, and settling private transfers. To use MobilePay you need a Danish or Greenlandic phone number and a linked Danish-system bank account (CPR required). Contactless card payments are universal. Cash is still useful in remote settlements and for hunters/fishers markets, but most day-to-day life in towns requires only a card.

Cash access

ATMs (hæveautomater) are available in all main towns — Nuuk has multiple ATMs including at Brugseni supermarkets and the town centre. Grønlandsbanken and BankNordik machines accept international Visa and Mastercard cards. Remote settlements may have no ATM — carry cash when travelling outside main centres, especially in summer for boat/helicopter transfers to smaller communities.

RKI / Experian Denmark (Debitorregisteret)

Request a free credit report at experian.dk under "Debitorregisteret". RKI registration means you cannot get credit, a phone contract, or many rental agreements. Greenland uses the same system as Denmark.

Free annual check: Free report available at experian.dk

New expats have no RKI history, which is neutral — not positive, not negative. Grønlandsbanken will assess creditworthiness through income, employer, and bank statements. An RKI entry from unpaid debt in Denmark can affect your ability to open accounts or rent an apartment in Greenland.

International transfers

Greenland uses standard Danish IBAN accounts (DK prefix). SEPA transfers within the EU/EEA are free or very low cost and typically same-day. For transfers to non-SEPA destinations (e.g. to family back home), use Wise or Revolut for the best mid-market rates rather than paying Grønlandsbanken's international wire fees (typically DKK 100–200 per SWIFT transfer). Salary from Danish public institutions arrives as a standard bank transfer.
