Greenland (GL)
Greenland is the world's largest island and an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, known for its vast ice sheet, dramatic fjords, and indigenous Greenlandic (Kalaallit) culture.
Consumer Rights
Right of withdrawal, contracts and debt collection in Greenland.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Danish consumer protection legislation — including the Danish Sale of Goods Act (Købeloven) and the Consumer Contracts Act (Forbrugeraftaleloven) — applies in Greenland through the realm. The Danish Consumer Ombudsman (Forbrugerombudsmanden) has jurisdiction. However, Greenland is NOT a member of the EU, so EU consumer protection directives do not apply directly. Practical consumer resolution is harder than in Denmark due to geographic remoteness, freight costs, limited competition and a small market. Always preserve receipts, screenshots and delivery terms.
Right of withdrawal (Widerrufsrecht)
Danish consumer law provides a 14-day right of withdrawal for distance and online sales under the Forbrugeraftaleloven, which applies in Greenland. The 14-day period runs from delivery for goods, or from contract conclusion for services. Notify the seller in writing (email is sufficient) before the deadline; no reason is required. Exceptions: custom-made goods, perishable goods, digital content after download begins, sealed hygiene items once opened. Return shipping from Greenland is typically costly — factor this in before purchasing online. For goods ordered from Denmark or abroad: for faulty goods, contact the seller and escalate to Forbrugerombudsmanden if the seller refuses.
Contract cancellation
Telecom, gym, subscriptions and leases require written cancellation under contract terms. Keep proof and final invoices. Tusass (formerly Tele-Post) is the main telecom and postal provider in Greenland. Check your contract for minimum terms and notice periods before cancelling.
Check renewal and notice periods for insurance, internet, subscriptions and storage. Auto-renewal can be hard to unwind after leaving Greenland. Set calendar reminders 30–60 days before annual contract end dates. Cancel in writing and request written confirmation.
Debt collection — response deadlines
Informal reminders: Creditors send payment reminders (rykkere) by letter, email or phone. Do not ignore them — respond in writing even if only to dispute the debt.
Court order: Formal debt recovery follows Danish civil procedure through the Greenlandic court system (Retten i Grønland) and the enforcement court (fogedretten). Unresolved debts proceed to enforcement — bank account and wage garnishment are possible after a court judgment.
Response deadline: Respond to court summons within the deadline stated in the documents. In Danish/Greenlandic civil procedure, failure to respond typically results in a default judgment within 2–4 weeks. Seek legal advice immediately if you receive court papers.
Consumer protection authority
Danish Consumer Ombudsman (Forbrugerombudsmanden — forbrugerombudsmanden.dk) for unfair trade and marketing complaints. Retten i Grønland for civil disputes. Naalakkersuisut (Greenlandic Government) handles some territorial trade and consumer matters.
Consumer complaints: start with the seller, then Forbrugerombudsmanden (forbrugerombudsmanden.dk). Telecom disputes: Tusass customer service, then relevant authority. Banking: your bank's internal complaint process, then the Danish Financial Complaints Board (Pengeinstitutankenævnet — ankenævnetforbanker.dk). Rental and property disputes: Retten i Grønland. Scams and fraud: Grønlands Politi.
