Coins: 50 øre, 1kr, 2kr, 5kr, 10kr, 20kr. Notes: 50kr, 100kr, 200kr, 500kr, 1000kr.
Payment Culture
Card payment is widespread in Nuuk and larger towns. Smaller settlements and remote fishing communities may prefer or require cash. Always carry some DKK in cash when travelling outside Nuuk. Mobile pay (MobilePay) is popular among locals.
ATM Tips
ATMs (hæveautomater) are available in Nuuk and larger towns. Bank of Greenland (Grønlandsbanken) ATMs are most reliable. Foreign cards are generally accepted but fees of 20–40kr per withdrawal are common. Stock up on cash before visiting remote areas — ATMs are rare or absent.
Exchange Tips
Exchange currency before arriving or in Nuuk. Wise and Revolut cards work well and reduce foreign transaction fees. Airport exchange desks in Copenhagen are better than most. DKK is the same currency used in Denmark — bring Danish kroner from Copenhagen if transiting.
