EU Citizens

Greenland is outside the EU and Schengen. EU/EEA/Swiss citizenship alone does not create EU free-movement work rights in Greenland; check Greenland-specific rules unless you also have Nordic status.

Non-EU Citizens

Most non-Nordic foreign nationals need a Greenland-specific residence and work permit before starting paid work. Applications are handled through Danish immigration channels (SIRI) for Greenland. A new digital GL1/5 application form was launched in February 2026.

EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card framework does not apply in Greenland.

Freelancer Visa

There is no broad digital-nomad visa. Self-employed work normally needs Greenland-specific permission, tax registration and a realistic local business basis.

Typical hours Often 37-40 hours per week, but healthcare, education, tourism, fisheries, aviation and municipal services can involve shifts, call-outs and weather-driven changes.

Annual leave Contract and collective-agreement based; many Danish/Greenlandic employers provide around 5 weeks (25 days) of annual leave.

Sick leave Rules depend on contract, collective agreement and social-benefit eligibility. Ask HR how doctor notes, salary continuation and municipal benefits work.

Trial period Probation is commonly written into contracts for salaried employees; confirm exact length and notice during probation.

Notice period Contract and seniority based. Statutory employer notice: 1 month (up to 6 months service); 3 months (6 months–3 years); 6 months (over 3 years). Employer housing can make notice and exit timing especially important.

Salary range Public and specialist roles often pay DKK 28,000-60,000+ monthly, with housing/relocation sometimes more important than headline salary.
