Denominations
Coins: ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10, ₹20. Notes: ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200, ₹500, ₹2000 (being withdrawn). Exchange rate approx. ₹83–85/USD (2026).
Payment Culture
India is rapidly going cashless due to UPI (Unified Payments Interface). PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm dominate for everyday transactions. Cash still essential in rural areas, small markets, and auto-rickshaws. Many street vendors now accept UPI QR codes.
ATM Tips
ATMs ('Cash Machines') are widely available in cities. Foreign card fees: ₹150–250 per withdrawal. HDFC and ICICI ATMs most reliable. Always carry ₹500–1,000 cash for emergencies. Inform your home bank before travelling.
Exchange Tips
Exchange money at authorised dealers or banks — avoid touts. Airport exchange rates are poor. Wise and Revolut excellent for international transfers. The INR is not freely convertible internationally — you cannot take more than ₹25,000 cash out of India.
