India (IN)
India is the world's most populous nation and a fast-rising global power — a vibrant federal republic of extraordinary cultural, linguistic, and geographic diversity.
Learning the Language in India
Courses, certifications, funding, and online resources to reach fluency.
India is extraordinarily diverse linguistically — 22 scheduled languages, 100+ regional languages, and English as the language of business, education, and expat life. Hindi is the most widely spoken language (spoken natively by ~44% of the population) and the lingua franca in north and central India. However, south India (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh/Telangana) has strong resistance to Hindi imposition — local languages (Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu) are used daily and English is the preferred link language. For expats in Bengaluru: Kannada is the local language, but English works everywhere. In Mumbai: Hindi and Marathi (though English universally understood). In Delhi: Hindi dominates. Chennai: Tamil; English widely used in professional settings. Learning the local language of your city significantly enriches expat life and is deeply appreciated by locals.

Practical Tips
-
Learn the local language of your city first rather than Hindi if you are in south India (Bengaluru: Kannada; Chennai: Tamil; Hyderabad: Telugu). Hindi is not well-received as a first approach in Tamil Nadu.
-
Even 10–20 basic phrases in Hindi or the local language earn enormous goodwill — Indians deeply appreciate the effort.
-
Learn the Devanagari script (for Hindi) — it's phonetic and learnable in 2–3 weeks. Enormously helpful for reading signs, menus, and labels.
-
WhatsApp voice notes with Indian colleagues are excellent informal practice.
-
Download Google Translate in offline mode for Devanagari (Hindi), Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu script recognition — invaluable for reading menus and signs.
-
Watch Bollywood films with English subtitles — effective and entertaining Hindi immersion.
-
YouTube has thousands of free Hindi learning videos — "Learn Hindi with Anil Mahato" and "HindiPod101" are highly rated.
-
Language exchange on Tandem or Speaky apps — connect with Indians who want to practise English while teaching you Hindi.
