India (IN)
India is the world's most populous nation and a fast-rising global power — a vibrant federal republic of extraordinary cultural, linguistic, and geographic diversity.
Insurance Guide
Which insurances you actually need in India, prioritised.
Insurance in India is regulated by IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India). Third-party motor insurance is the only legally mandatory insurance in India. Health insurance is not legally mandatory but is essential for expats — government hospitals are available but quality varies widely and expats should always have private health coverage. India has very affordable insurance costs compared to Western countries. The insurance sector is growing rapidly with many private players alongside government insurers (LIC, New India, Oriental).
Legally Mandatory
- - Third-party motor vehicle insurance (mandatory under Motor Vehicles Act 1988)
International Health Insurance
Comprehensive health coverage including hospitalisation, outpatient, emergency evacuation, maternity, and dental. Essential for expats — covers both India and travel abroad.
Who needs it: All expats. Non-negotiable — India has no public health safety net for foreigners.
Annual cost: ₹40,000–2,00,000/year depending on age, coverage level, and family size
Many employers provide group health insurance — verify coverage limits. Individual international plans better for comprehensive global coverage. Check that emergency evacuation is included.
Domestic Health Insurance (Group Plan / Employer)
Employer-provided group health insurance covering hospitalisation. Most Indian corporate employers provide this. Coverage typically ₹3–10 lakh per family per year.
Who needs it: Employed expats — supplement with international plan for gaps in coverage.
Annual cost: Usually fully employer-paid (₹8,000–30,000 premium per employee)
Check if employer group plan covers dependants. Cashless treatment at network hospitals. Top-up plan recommended to increase coverage sum if employer plan limit is low.
Third-Party Motor Insurance
Mandatory legal minimum — covers damage or injury caused to third parties by your vehicle. Does NOT cover your own vehicle or occupants.
Who needs it: All vehicle owners. Legally mandatory under Motor Vehicles Act 1988.
Annual cost: ₹2,000–8,000 depending on engine capacity
Driving without minimum third-party insurance is illegal and invites heavy fines. FASTag tolls and RTO checks both verify insurance status.
Comprehensive Motor Insurance
Covers your own vehicle damage (accidents, fire, theft, natural disaster) PLUS third-party liability. Also includes own damage cover and roadside assistance option.
Who needs it: All vehicle owners — strongly recommended over basic third-party.
Annual cost: ₹8,000–40,000 depending on vehicle value and IDV (Insured Declared Value)
Declare correct IDV (market value of vehicle) — low IDV saves premium but means lower payout. Zero-depreciation add-on strongly recommended for newer cars. NCB (No Claim Bonus) discount builds with claim-free years.
Term Life Insurance
Pure death benefit life insurance — pays lump sum to nominees if you die during the policy term. Extremely affordable in India. Critical for anyone with dependants.
Who needs it: Employed expats with family dependants in India or abroad.
Annual cost: ₹8,000–25,000/year for ₹1 crore (₹10 million) cover for a 35-year-old non-smoker
India has some of the world's cheapest term insurance rates. NRIs and foreign nationals may need to check eligibility and residency requirements for each insurer.
Personal Accident Insurance
Pays lump sum or income if you suffer accidental death or disability. Supplements health insurance.
Who needs it: Everyone — especially those who drive, travel frequently, or work in physically active roles.
Annual cost: ₹2,000–8,000/year for ₹25–50 lakh cover
Road traffic accidents are a major risk in India — India has one of the world's highest road fatality rates. Personal accident insurance is excellent value.
Home Contents / Renters Insurance
Covers your personal belongings in a rented home against theft, fire, flooding, and damage. Not mandatory but recommended.
Who needs it: All renters with significant personal property.
Annual cost: ₹2,000–10,000/year depending on sum insured
Cover your laptop, camera, and valuables specifically. Check that the policy covers theft from locked premises.
Travel Insurance
Covers medical emergencies, trip cancellation, lost baggage, and flight delays during international or domestic travel.
Who needs it: All expats travelling domestically and internationally. Essential if your international health insurance does not cover travel disruption.
Annual cost: ₹1,500–5,000 per trip (or ₹10,000–25,000 for annual multi-trip plans)
Annual multi-trip plans good value for frequent travellers. Ensure medical coverage is adequate for destination country's healthcare costs.
Comparison sites
Always read the policy exclusions carefully — pre-existing conditions, adventure sports, and alcohol-related accidents are commonly excluded.
For health insurance, prefer insurers with large cashless hospital networks in your city.
Car insurance: install anti-theft device for additional discount. No Claim Bonus (NCB) grows each claim-free year.
Life insurance: term plans are significantly cheaper than endowment/ULIPs — avoid mixing investment with insurance.
IRDAI (irdai.gov.in) is the regulator — file complaints at IRDAI Bima Bharosa portal if insurer does not settle claims fairly.
Group health plan from employer: add a top-up/super top-up plan to increase coverage above the group plan limit at minimal extra cost.
