Ireland (IE)
Ireland is a parliamentary republic and island nation on the western edge of Europe — the only English-speaking country in the Eurozone — celebrated for its warmly welcoming culture and legendary pub life, dramatic Wild Atlantic Way coastline and emerald green rolling countryside, a remarkable literary tradition from Joyce to Beckett, and its role as the European headquarters for the world's leading technology companies including Google, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, and LinkedIn.
Consumer Rights
Right of withdrawal, contracts and debt collection in Ireland.
Irish consumer rights are governed primarily by the Consumer Rights Act 2022 (implementing EU Directives), the Sale of Goods Act, and the Consumer Protection Act 2007. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) at ccpc.ie is the primary enforcement body. Ireland's consumer protection framework is broadly aligned with EU standards, providing robust rights for purchases, returns, and online contracts.
Right of withdrawal (Widerrufsrecht)
14 calendar days to cancel distance and off-premises contracts (online purchases, telephone sales, doorstep sales) without giving a reason. The cooling-off period starts from the day you receive the goods (for goods contracts) or the day the contract is concluded (for services contracts). The trader must refund within 14 days of being notified of cancellation. You bear return postage costs unless the trader fails to inform you of this right.
Contract cancellation
For gym memberships, subscription boxes, and ongoing service contracts: most have a minimum term (typically 12 months). Cancellation outside the 14-day cooling-off window may incur a fee. Contracts of indefinite duration must be terminable with reasonable notice. For utilities: most providers allow switching with 30 days notice.
Automatic renewal of contracts (subscriptions, insurance, memberships) must be clearly disclosed at the time of purchase and before auto-renewal. Traders must provide notice of upcoming renewal in advance. Consumers can cancel before the renewal date. Irish law aligns with EU Omnibus Directive requirements on unfair practices.
Debt collection — response deadlines
Informal reminders: Informal reminder letters or calls from the creditor or debt collection agency. No legal obligations attach at this stage, though the debt is still owed.
Court order: If debt is not disputed and unpaid, the creditor may seek a court judgment. For debts under €15,000: District Court (relatively fast and inexpensive). Judgment debts are enforceable through the Sheriff (enforcement officer).
Response deadline: 21 days to respond to a civil debt claim once served with court documents. Ignoring a debt claim results in a default judgment against you.
