👶 Childcare & Kindergarten

Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Scheme Free (ECCE-funded hours): 15 hours/week, 38 weeks/year. Additional hours: €200–€600/month.

The ECCE scheme provides free pre-school for children in the eligible age range. The National Childcare Scheme (NCS) provides income-based subsidies for additional childcare hours beyond ECCE, ranging from €1.40 to full cost reduction for lower-income families.

Private arrangement with childminder. Ensure childminder is registered with Tusla for child protection compliance and NCS subsidy eligibility.

⏱️ Good childminders are in high demand. Start asking for recommendations immediately on arrival. Local Facebook parent groups are invaluable for finding vetted childminders.

Primary school Free

Primary school (Bunscoil)

Ages: 4–12 years (Junior Infants to 6th Class — 8 years) · Language: English (majority). Gaelscoileanna (Irish-medium schools) are popular in Dublin and other cities — instruction entirely in Irish Gaeilge.

Contact schools directly. Each school operates its own enrolment policy. Oversubscribed schools have waitlists — apply early. School transport scheme available for rural children. The school patronage system means schools are mainly Catholic, Educate Together (multi-denominational), Church of Ireland, or An Foras Pátrúnachta (Irish-medium).

Primary school is free but there are voluntary contributions (typically €100–€200/year) and costs for uniforms, school books, and activities. The "free schoolbooks scheme" (2024+) covers primary school books. Schools use Aladdin for parent communications in most areas.

Secondary school Free

Secondary school (Meánscoil)

Ages: 12–18 years (Junior Cycle years 1–3, Senior Cycle years 4–6) · Language: English (with Irish as a compulsory subject for state exams). Gaelcholáistí (Irish-medium secondary schools) available.

Contact schools directly in January–March for September start. Schools are heavily oversubscribed in Dublin suburbs — proximity often the main criterion. Junior Certificate at age 15 (end of 3rd year); Leaving Certificate at age 18 (end of 6th year). The Leaving Cert is the entry qualification for Irish universities via the CAO system.

Secondary school is free but voluntary contributions and uniform/book costs apply. Transition Year (TY) is an optional 4th year between Junior and Senior cycle focused on personal development, work experience, and non-exam activities — widely done and valued. The Leaving Certificate is the primary university entry criterion in Ireland.

International Schools

Several international schools operate in Dublin and other cities. St Kilian's Deutsche Schule (German curriculum), the German School Dublin, French lycées (Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle), the American School of Dublin, and the International School Dublin offer international curricula. Fees: €8,000–€25,000/year. Most have long waiting lists — apply at least 1 year in advance. The Department of Education funds some special DEIS (disadvantaged area) and non-denominational schools. Educate Together schools are the main secular option for families not wishing Catholic education.

University

Tuition fee

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens: €2,500 student contribution per year from January 2026 (reduced from €3,000; this is a registration and facilities charge, not full tuition). Plus registration fee (varies per institution, typically €200–€500). Total cost approximately €2,700–€3,000/year. Non-EU/EEA students: full fees — typically €10,000–€25,000/year depending on course and institution. Postgraduate fees vary considerably by programme.

Semester fee

Annual student contribution: €2,500 for EU students from January 2026 (reduced from €3,000). Covers registration and campus services. Separate examination fees and module fees may apply for some courses. SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland) grants available for eligible Irish and EU students based on income.

Student visa

Non-EU students require a student visa (D visa — long-stay). Apply at the Irish consulate in your home country. Must show: letter of acceptance, proof of tuition fee payment, proof of funds (€7,000 minimum for living expenses), medical insurance. Apply well in advance — 8–12 weeks before course start.

Health insurance

EU students are covered by their home country EHIC for medical emergencies during studies. Long-stay students should register with a GP and are entitled to HSE services as residents. Student health centres at all universities. Private health insurance recommended for quicker specialist access.

Application process

Undergraduate: Apply through CAO (Central Applications Office — cao.ie) by 1 February deadline (normal) or 1 May (with late fee). Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) points determine entry. Each course has a minimum CAO points threshold (varies annually by demand). Postgraduate: Apply directly to the institution.

Free through ETBs for legal residents (Government-funded adult literacy and ESOL programmes). Private language schools: €500–€3,000 for intensive courses.

English language courses are widely available for non-English-speaking newcomers. ETBs across the country offer free or subsidised English and ESOL classes. Private language schools (EF, Berlitz, Linguaphone, many local schools) offer accredited programmes. Not mandatory for residence but essential for employment.

Irish Language (Gaeilge)

€100–€400 for evening/weekend courses. Some free community classes.

Irish is the national language but only spoken daily by approximately 2% of the population (mainly in Gaeltacht areas in the west). Most expats never learn Irish. Duolingo Irish is extremely popular. For those interested: Conradh na Gaeilge (cnag.ie) runs excellent evening classes in Dublin and elsewhere. Gaeltacht areas (Connemara, Donegal, Kerry) offer immersion courses in summer.
