Lithuania (LT)
Lithuania is the largest and most southerly of the three Baltic states, a semi-presidential EU republic celebrated for its remarkably preserved Baroque capital Vilnius (UNESCO World Heritage), dramatic coastal dunes at Neringa (also UNESCO), vibrant startup and fintech ecosystem (home of Revolut HQ, Vinted, Nord Security, and Hostinger), rapidly rising living standards, and a resilient population with deep cultural roots stretching back to one of the last pagan civilisations in Europe to adopt Christianity.
⚠️ Costly Mistakes to Avoid
The most expensive and common mistakes expats make in Lithuania — and exactly how to avoid them.
Register with Sodra immediately — all healthcare and benefits depend on it
Sodra (the State Social Insurance Fund Board) is the foundation of Lithuania's social protection system. Your access to the public health insurance fund (PSDF), unemployment benefit, sickness benefit, maternity/paternity pay, and state pension all flow through your Sodra registration. Employed persons are registered automatically by their employer, but self-employed persons and others must register themselves. Without Sodra registration, you are not entitled to any public health insurance coverage and cannot access Sodra benefits.
⚡ Without Sodra registration: no public healthcare coverage, no entitlement to any Sodra benefits (sickness, unemployment, maternity), and no pension contributions accumulating. If you fall ill before registering, all medical costs are out-of-pocket.
📅 Deadline: Within the first week of starting employment or self-employment in Lithuania
✅ If employed, confirm with your employer that they have registered you with Sodra and check at sodra.lt (with Smart-ID login) that your registration appears. Self-employed persons must register at sodra.lt or at a Sodra branch in person. Bring your asmens kodas (Lithuanian personal ID number) and residence permit.
Set up Smart-ID immediately — it is required for virtually all e-government services
Smart-ID is Lithuania's dominant digital authentication platform and is used across virtually all public e-services: sodra.lt, vmi.lt (tax), epaslaugos.lt, online banking (Swedbank, SEB, Luminor, Paysera), migris.lt (immigration), e-receptas (prescriptions), and many more. Without Smart-ID, you cannot log in to most Lithuanian digital services and must visit offices in person for every transaction. Smart-ID is free to install and available to residents with Lithuanian bank accounts or eID cards.
⚡ Without Smart-ID: every interaction with Sodra, VMI, the Migration Department, your bank, and health services requires a physical in-person visit. Filing your annual tax declaration (GPM308), checking your Sodra record, and managing your residence permit online are all impossible without digital authentication.
📅 Deadline: Set up within your first week — requires an existing Lithuanian bank account or eID card for verification
✅ Open a Lithuanian bank account (Paysera or Revolut accept foreign passports and can be done without visiting a branch). Once you have a bank account, download the Smart-ID app from your bank's app store or at smart-id.com and follow the setup instructions. Smart-ID is free. The Mobile Signature (m. parašas) is an alternative via your Lithuanian phone SIM.
Declare your NPD (non-taxable income amount) to your employer — or face over-withholding
The NPD (Neapmokestinamasis pajamų dydis) is Lithuania's personal tax-free allowance — approximately €625/month in 2026 for those earning at minimum wage level, phasing to zero above approximately €2,387/month gross. To benefit from this allowance, you must submit Form FR0003 to your employer. If you do not submit this form, your employer withholds 20% GPM income tax on your full gross salary without the deduction — meaning you overpay tax each month and must reclaim the difference by filing your annual tax declaration in May.
⚡ Without submitting FR0003: over-withholding of GPM income tax each month. For a person earning €1,500/month gross, the monthly over-withholding can be €80–120. You can reclaim the overpaid tax in your annual GPM308 declaration, but this means waiting until May of the following year for a refund.
📅 Deadline: Submit FR0003 to your employer at the start of employment and every January
✅ Download Form FR0003 from vmi.lt and submit it to your employer's payroll department on your first day. Review the NPD amount with payroll to confirm it is being applied correctly. Submit a new FR0003 each January as the NPD thresholds are updated annually. Check your payslip each month to verify the NPD deduction is applied.
Rental scams on Aruodas.lt are common — never pay a deposit before viewing in person
Aruodas.lt (the dominant property listing site in Lithuania) has rental fraud listings, particularly for attractive apartments in popular districts priced slightly below market rate. Common pattern: landlord is "abroad", asks for advance deposit via bank transfer or crypto before you can view. The apartment either does not exist or belongs to someone else. Legitimate landlords do not require deposits before an in-person viewing. Never pay anything before physically entering the apartment and meeting the actual owner with proof of ownership.
⚡ Loss of €500–2,000 deposit with no recourse. Arriving in Lithuania expecting accommodation that does not exist.
✅ Never transfer money before viewing the apartment in person. Verify the landlord's identity with their ID and the property ownership at registrucentras.lt (Real Estate Register). If a deal seems too good to be true at a premium address, it almost certainly is. Use a registered real estate agent (nekilnojamojo turto agentas, NTBA member) for added security. Report fraud at policija.lt.
Annual GPM income declaration is due 2 May — file even if you think no tax is owed
Lithuania's annual income tax declaration (GPM308) must be filed by 2 May each year for the previous calendar year. Many employees with a single employer and no other income technically do not need to file — BUT filing is always beneficial because: (1) you can claim tax deductions for 3rd pillar pension contributions (up to 15% of income), life insurance premiums, education expenses, apartment renovation costs, and charitable donations; (2) if your employer incorrectly applied your NPD, you get a refund; (3) foreign income MUST be declared. VMI pre-populates your known income — log in at vmi.lt with Smart-ID and review.
⚡ Missing deductions you are entitled to (potentially €200–800/year in tax savings). Undeclared foreign income triggering VMI enforcement with interest and penalties.
📅 Deadline: 2 May each year
✅ Log in to vmi.lt from 1 February onwards and review your pre-populated GPM308 form. Add any missing income. Claim deductions: 3rd pillar pension contributions (invest in IGL), education costs, apartment renovation by VAT-registered contractors, and certified life insurance premiums. File electronically — takes 30 minutes. Keep all receipts during the year.
VAT registration threshold is €45,000/year — self-employed must monitor turnover
If your annual business or freelance turnover (apyvarta) in Lithuania exceeds €45,000, you are required to register for VAT (PVM — Pridėtinės vertės mokestis) with VMI. Many IT freelancers and consultants approach or exceed this threshold. Once registered, you charge 21% VAT on invoices to clients and file quarterly PVM declarations. Failing to register when obligated triggers back-VAT liability plus interest and penalties. For B2B services to EU-registered companies, you can apply the reverse-charge mechanism (no VAT charged but still need monitoring).
⚡ Back-VAT assessment, interest, and penalties if you exceed €45,000 turnover without registering. Late registration fine: €14–300. Plus the back-VAT on all invoices above the threshold.
📅 Deadline: Register within 30 days of exceeding €45,000 cumulative in a calendar year
✅ Track your cumulative invoiced turnover monthly via your individualios veiklos pažyma records. Set an alert at €35,000 to begin the registration process with buffer time. Register at vmi.lt. Consider whether voluntary early VAT registration is beneficial (allows input VAT reclaim on business purchases).
District heating bills in Soviet-era buildings can reach €200–300/month in January — budget carefully
Most Vilnius, Kaunas, and Klaipėda apartment buildings use centralised district heating (centralizuotas šilumos tiekimas). The heat is turned on by the city automatically when outdoor temperatures fall below +10°C (typically October–April). You cannot control the heat individually. Soviet-era panel buildings without renovated insulation (unrenovated chrushchovkai) are energy-inefficient — heating bills of €150–300/month in December–February are common. Ask your landlord for the previous year's utility bills (sąskaitos) before signing any lease.
⚡ A €600/month apartment can have total monthly costs of €800–1,000+ in January when heating is included. Serious budget shortfall for unprepared tenants.
✅ Before signing: ask for the last 12 months of komunaliniai mokesčiai (utility bills). Check the building's energy performance certificate (EPC) — aim for B or C. Renovated buildings (renovuoti namai) with insulated facades and modern windows have dramatically lower bills. The giluminis renovavimas EU-funded programme has improved many buildings but not all.
Lithuania is Europe's biggest EMI licensor — check any fintech's licence status before depositing large sums
Vilnius hosts over 200 Electronic Money Institutions (EMIs) and Payment Institutions (PIs) licensed by the Bank of Lithuania — including Revolut's EU entity. EMI funds are technically not covered by the Lithuanian Deposit Guarantee Scheme (VDAI) in the same way as licensed bank deposits. If an EMI goes bankrupt, your funds are held in segregated client accounts — but recovery is not as straightforward as with a licensed bank. Periodically verify that your fintech provider's licence is current at lb.lt before holding large balances.
⚡ Funds held with a revoked or suspended EMI licence becoming inaccessible or requiring lengthy claims procedures during a wind-down.
✅ Check lb.lt/en/financial-market-participants for your fintech provider's current licence status. Keep amounts above €10,000 in a traditionally licensed bank (Swedbank, SEB, Luminor, Šiaulių bankas). Use fintech apps for day-to-day transactions, not as a savings repository. Licensed bank deposits are guaranteed up to €100,000 per person by VDAI.
Some Lithuanian employers require an Iban in a Baltic bank — Revolut's Lithuanian IBAN may not always work
While Revolut issues Lithuanian IBANs (LT prefix), some Lithuanian employers and government systems do not accept Revolut or other EMI IBANs for salary payments. Sodra salary filings and some payroll systems explicitly require a licensed bank IBAN (Swedbank, SEB, Luminor, Šiaulių bankas, Medicinos bankas). Clarify with your employer before your first payroll date. Additionally, Sodra benefit payments (parental leave, unemployment) require a licensed bank or savings account — not just an EMI account.
⚡ Salary payment failure on your first payday if your employer's payroll system rejects your IBAN. Sodra benefit payments may also be rejected for EMI accounts.
✅ Open a Swedbank or SEB account as soon as you have your asmens kodas — use Revolut only as a backup or for daily transactions. Inform your employer of your licensed bank IBAN (not Revolut) for salary payments. Provide your licensed bank IBAN to Sodra for benefit payments.
Tick-borne encephalitis risk is high in Lithuanian forests — vaccination is strongly recommended
Lithuania has one of the highest TBE incidence rates in Europe — approximately 5–8 cases per 100,000 people annually. Forests cover 35% of the country and are widely used for mushroom picking, berrying, hiking, and recreation. Ticks are active from March to November. TBE vaccination (erkių encefalito vakcina) requires 3 doses over 12 months for full protection — or an accelerated 21-day schedule. There is no treatment for TBE once contracted. Lyme disease (Laimo boreliozė) is also endemic but treatable.
⚡ Risk of severe encephalitis with permanent neurological damage or death in serious cases. Lithuania's forest culture means exposure is high without vaccination.
📅 Deadline: Vaccinate before first forest visit (spring: from March)
✅ Get TBE vaccination from your šeimos gydytojas or private clinic — approximately €35–50 per dose, 3 needed. Always use tick repellent in forests. Wear long sleeves and pants. Check for ticks thoroughly after outdoor time. Use tick forceps (erkių repelentai and erkių žnyplės at pharmacies). Report tick bites to your doctor.
Lithuania borders Belarus and is close to Kaliningrad — understand the security situation
Lithuania shares a border with Belarus and is adjacent to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. The security situation in the region has been significantly elevated since 2022. Lithuania is a committed NATO member and has a robust civil preparedness framework. The Government regularly updates civil preparedness guidance — the "How to act in emergency situations" handbook (laisvas.lt, provided in English) is officially distributed to all Lithuanian residents. NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence has grown substantially, and Germany is stationing a permanent brigade in Lithuania from 2024 onwards.
⚡ Lithuania is secure and NATO-defended. However: residents should be aware of the civil preparedness guidance, know the locations of emergency shelters in their city, and understand the national alert system (sirens and mobile alerts via LT-Alert). Some expats find the geopolitical context unsettling — understanding the actual civil defence preparations reduces unfounded anxiety.
✅ Download the Lithuanian civil preparedness handbook (available at laisvas.lt in English, Ukrainian, and Russian). Register your mobile number for LT-Alert emergency alerts at lt-alert.lt. Know your nearest emergency shelter (vilnius.lt has shelter maps). Follow credible Lithuanian news sources (LRT.lt in English) for situational awareness. The NATO presence is extensive and growing.
Vilnius rental market is extremely competitive — act fast and budget for higher rents
Vilnius has experienced sustained rental price inflation driven by urbanisation, strong economic growth, and the arrival of over 70,000 Ukrainian refugees since 2022. Good apartments in Vilnius's central and popular districts (Senamiestis, Žvėrynas, Naujamiestis, Šnipiškės, Pašilaičiai) are typically rented within hours of being listed. In 2026, a 1-bedroom apartment in central Vilnius costs €700–1,100/month; 2-bedrooms €900–1,500/month. The market is significantly undersupplied relative to demand.
⚡ Failing to act within hours of a listing being posted means missing the apartment. Attempting to negotiate significantly below the asking price in a hot market means losing the flat entirely. Arriving without pre-arranged accommodation can leave you in expensive short-term rentals for longer than anticipated.
✅ Search on Aruodas.lt (primary market) and Domoplius.lt. Set up daily email alerts for new listings matching your criteria. Have your documentation ready (passport, work contract, bank details) before you begin searching so you can commit immediately. Budget for 2 months' rent as deposit plus first month upfront. Consider using a local estate agent (brokeris) to find unlisted properties. Look at districts 15–20 minutes from centre (Antakalnis, Lazdynai, Viršuliškės) for significantly better value.
Minimum wage rose 12% in 2026 — review your salary expectations and contracts accordingly
Lithuania's minimum monthly wage (MMA — minimalioji mėnesinė alga) rose from €924 to €1,038/month (gross) on 1 January 2026 — a 12.3% increase. Lithuania's minimum wage has grown 62% in five years (from €642 in 2021). Any employment contract referencing minimum wage must be updated. If your salary was near or at the minimum, your employer is legally required to increase it. Salary benchmarks across all sectors have shifted substantially.
⚡ Contracts referencing the minimum wage that have not been updated are non-compliant. Employers who fail to pay the new minimum wage are subject to VDI (Labour Inspectorate) enforcement and fines. Employees who are unaware of the increase may not recognise that they are being underpaid.
✅ Check your employment contract to verify your gross salary is above €1,038/month. If your contract references the minimum wage, ensure it has been updated. Salary negotiations should reference current market rates — check CVbankas.lt and CV Online LT for current salary data by sector. The minimum hourly wage in 2026 is €6.35/hour.
Lithuanian language (B1 level) is required for citizenship — start learning early
Lithuanian citizenship by naturalisation requires, among other conditions, demonstrated B1 level proficiency in the Lithuanian language (certified by the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language, VLKK). Lithuanian is one of the most complex European languages for English speakers (FSI Category IV, approximately 1,100 class hours to professional proficiency). Even for daily life outside central Vilnius — the public sector, healthcare, smaller towns, shops, and tradespeople — functional Lithuanian is essential. English is widely spoken in Vilnius tech and business circles but not universally.
⚡ Without B1 Lithuanian, citizenship naturalisation is not possible regardless of how long you have lived in Lithuania. Without functional A2–B1 Lithuanian, daily life outside Vilnius centre becomes significantly harder — GP appointments, dealings with government offices, tradespeople, and municipality services may not have English-speaking staff.
✅ Begin Lithuanian language learning from your first month in Lithuania — do not delay. Non-EU newcomers are entitled to free state-funded language classes (adaptation programme — register at uzt.lt). EU citizens can access subsidised LDB courses. Enrol at Vilnius University's Centre of Lithuanian Studies (klf.vu.lt) for rigorous structured instruction. Use Duolingo for daily vocabulary practice. Allow 2–4 years of regular study to reach B1 level.
Lithuania generally prohibits dual citizenship — naturalisation requires renouncing your previous passport
Lithuania does not permit dual citizenship in most cases. Naturalised Lithuanian citizens must renounce their previous citizenship. Important exceptions: persons of Lithuanian descent (including those whose ancestors emigrated before 1940 or were deported) may restore their Lithuanian citizenship while keeping their other nationality — this is the diaspora restoration route. Ethnic Lithuanians returning from the diaspora have a distinct and more favourable pathway. For non-ethnic expats naturalising after 10 years, renunciation is required. This is a permanent and irreversible decision.
⚡ Permanently losing your original citizenship's benefits (travel rights, consular protection, property rights in country of origin) upon naturalisation. Expats who naturalise and then return to their home country may face complications with property rights, inheritance, and pension entitlements.
✅ Consult a Lithuanian immigration lawyer before beginning naturalisation. Research your home country's rules on citizenship loss upon naturalisation of another country. Consider whether Lithuanian permanent residency (without naturalisation) meets your practical needs — PR provides almost all benefits of citizenship except voting and a Lithuanian passport.
Lithuanian inheritance law includes forced heirship — your will may not override children's rights
Lithuania's Civil Code (Lietuvos Respublikos civilinis kodeksas) includes a forced heirship provision (privalomoji paveldėjimo dalis). Spouses and minor children are entitled to at least half of what they would receive under intestate succession, regardless of what your will states. Without a valid Lithuanian will, your assets in Lithuania are distributed under Lithuanian intestate law. EU Succession Regulation 650/2012 allows non-Lithuanians to elect their home country law — but only if explicitly stated in a will.
⚡ Your Lithuanian assets distributed contrary to your wishes if no valid will is in place. Forced heirship applying to children and spouse regardless of your will's provisions.
✅ Make a will with a Lithuanian notary that includes the EU Regulation 650/2012 election clause if you are a non-Lithuanian citizen. Keep the will registered at the Lithuanian notary system. Coordinate with a lawyer in your home country to ensure cross-border estate planning is coherent.
Health insurance (PSDF) is NOT automatic for all situations — check your status at esveikata.lt
Lithuanian public health insurance (PSDF — Privalomojo sveikatos draudimo fondas) is not automatically available to all residents. Coverage requirements: employed persons are covered when Sodra contributions are being paid. Self-employed: must pay self-employment PSD contributions quarterly. Unemployed persons: covered if registered at LDB (Lithuanian Employment Service). Students: covered by state. Those between jobs: covered for 3 months after employment ends. Without PSDF coverage, all medical treatment at state facilities is at full cost — emergency care still available but charged to the patient.
⚡ Being uninsured and receiving a hospital bill you expected to be covered. Common situation for: new arrivals who have not yet started work; newly self-employed who forgot to pay PSD; persons who left employment and exceeded the 3-month grace period.
✅ Check your PSDF status at esveikata.lt or sodra.lt with Smart-ID. If uncovered: register at LDB (if unemployed) or pay voluntary PSD contribution of approximately €43.49/month. Purchase private health insurance for any gap period.
Pets from non-EU countries require RNATT testing and a 21-day wait before entering Lithuania
Lithuania (as an EU member) applies EU pet import rules. Pets from non-EU countries (USA, UK, Australia, etc.) require an ISO microchip, a valid rabies vaccination, and a Rabies Neutralising Antibody Test (RNATT) conducted at an EU-approved laboratory with a mandatory 21-day wait before travel. The entire process takes 3–5 months from scratch. EU-origin pets need only a microchip, valid rabies vaccination, and EU pet passport. Lithuanian border controls at airports and land crossings verify documentation rigorously.
⚡ Pets refused entry at Lithuanian border crossings or airports. Quarantine costs and return freight at the owner's expense. Confiscation of animals with incorrect documentation.
📅 Deadline: Complete RNATT at least 21 days before travel — plan 4–6 months ahead for non-EU pets
✅ Contact the State Food and Veterinary Service (vmvt.lt) for current entry rules for your pet's species and country of origin. Start the RNATT process at least 3–4 months before intended travel. A licensed pet transport agency can manage the full documentation chain.
Non-EU driving licences must be exchanged for a Lithuanian licence within 90 days of registering permanent residency
Holders of non-EU/EEA driving licences who register permanent residency (deklaruota gyvenamoji vieta) in Lithuania must exchange their licence at a REGITRA service point within 90 days. The exchange may require: submitting the original foreign licence, a theory test (available in Lithuanian, Russian, or English), a vision check, and in some cases a practical driving test. Countries with bilateral agreements (USA, Canada, Australia) may be exempt from the practical test — verify with REGITRA (regitra.lt) for your specific country.
⚡ Driving on a non-EU licence after the 90-day deadline is an administrative offence. Fine: up to €300. Insurance may be invalidated in an accident if driving on an expired or invalid licence.
📅 Deadline: 90 days from registering permanent residency in Lithuania
✅ Contact REGITRA (regitra.lt) within the first month of registering permanent residency. Bring your original licence, passport, and proof of Lithuanian address. Book the theory test early — slots can be 2–4 weeks out. EU/EEA licence holders: your licence is valid in Lithuania but exchange is required for some administrative procedures.
Lithuania's income tax rates in 2026: 20% flat for most, 32% above ~€138,270/year
Lithuania's personal income tax (GPM — gyventojų pajamų mokestis) in 2026: 20% on employment and self-employment income up to approximately €138,270/year (60× average monthly salary — updated calculation basis for 2026); 32% on income above this threshold. The 2025 threshold was ~€114,162 (based on the old 120× minimum wage formula). Additionally, employee Sodra contributions are 12.52% (social security + health insurance). Employer Sodra contribution: 1.77% (accident insurance) + mandatory health insurance contributions. Total effective deductions from gross salary at average Lithuanian wages are approximately 32–35% of gross. Understanding net vs gross salary is critical when negotiating offers.
⚡ Accepting a job offer based on gross salary and being surprised by the significantly lower net amount. Average misunderstanding of the Lithuanian tax system by newly arrived expats.
✅ Use VMI's official salary calculator (kalkuliatorius.vmi.lt) to convert any gross salary to net. Note: the NPD (non-taxable income amount) must be declared to your employer via Form FR0003 to reduce monthly withholding.
Lithuania is a NATO front-line state — civil defence preparation is taken seriously
Lithuania shares a border with Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Since 2022, the Lithuanian government has significantly increased civil defence preparation. The official recommendation: all residents should keep 72-hour emergency supplies at home (water 4L/person/day, food, medication, battery/hand-crank radio, cash, important documents). LT-Alert sends emergency notifications via mobile. Public shelter locations are published by municipalities. Germany is stationing a permanent battalion/brigade in Lithuania. This is a stable NATO country — but civil preparedness is a genuine civic responsibility here.
⚡ Being unprepared for a civil emergency, whether due to geopolitical events, natural disaster, or infrastructure failure. Lithuania's civil defence guidance is practical and based on realistic risk assessments.
✅ Download the civil preparedness handbook (in English) at laisvas.lt. Register at lt-alert.lt for mobile emergency alerts. Keep emergency supplies at home. Know your building's evacuation route and your nearest emergency shelter (check vilnius.lt, kaunas.lt). Practice keeping your phone charged and your documents accessible.
Lithuania's e-health portal (esveikata.lt) holds your medical records — activate and check it
Lithuanian healthcare is integrated through the e-Sveikata (esveikata.lt) digital health portal. Your medical history, prescriptions, vaccination records, test results, specialist referrals, and sick leave documentation are stored here. Log in with Smart-ID. Your GP issues e-prescriptions (e-receptas) — take your ID card to the pharmacy to collect. Specialist referrals from your GP are tracked at esveikata.lt. You can book specialist appointments and see your medical records without calling your clinic.
⚡ Not knowing your medical records are digitally accessible, spending time on phone calls that could be handled online. Missing important test results or prescription renewals.
✅ Log in to esveikata.lt with Smart-ID within the first month. Check your vaccination records (important when travelling or starting a new job). Review your prescription history. Enable notifications for new records. When visiting the pharmacy, bring your ID card — the pharmacist reads your e-prescription directly from the system.
Lithuania is Europe's largest EMI licensor — understand the regulatory environment if working in fintech
The Bank of Lithuania (Lietuvos bankas, lb.lt) has issued more Electronic Money Institution (EMI) and Payment Institution (PI) licences than any other EU regulator — making Vilnius a major European fintech hub. Revolut's European headquarters are in Vilnius. However, the Bank of Lithuania has significantly tightened supervision since 2022, and some licensed entities have had licences revoked or suspended. EU's MiCA regulation (Markets in Crypto-Assets) became fully applicable in 2026, adding compliance obligations for crypto-asset service providers licensed in Lithuania.
⚡ If working for or banking with a Lithuanian-licensed fintech, it is worth periodically checking the Bank of Lithuania's public register (lb.lt) to verify the institution's licence status is valid. Customers of EMIs with revoked licences face a more complex claims process than traditional bank depositors — EMI funds are not covered by the Lithuanian deposit guarantee scheme (VDAI) in the same way as licensed bank deposits.
✅ Check any fintech institution's licence status at lb.lt/en/financial-market-participants before placing significant funds. Traditional licensed banks (Swedbank, SEB, Luminor, Šiaulių bankas) are covered by the Lithuanian deposit guarantee up to €100,000. Use lb.lt to verify any financial service provider before transferring large sums. If working in fintech, consult with a Lithuanian legal/compliance professional on MiCA obligations.
Lithuanian winters have very limited daylight — Seasonal Affective Disorder is clinically common
Vilnius receives only 7–8 hours of daylight in December, with overcast skies frequent from November to February. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD / sezono nuotaikos sutrikimas) is a clinically recognised condition and commonly experienced by both expats and Lithuanians. Many Lithuanians use 10,000 lux light therapy lamps (šviesos terapijos lempos) from October. Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common — supplementation from September to April is recommended by Lithuanian doctors for virtually all residents.
⚡ Fatigue, low mood, sleep disruption, and reduced productivity during winter months. Can be mistaken for clinical depression. Very manageable with appropriate tools.
✅ Purchase a 10,000 lux light therapy lamp (€40–100 at Senukai, Eurovaistinė, Ermitažas) and use for 20–30 minutes each morning from October. Take Vitamin D3 (2,000–4,000 IU/day) from September. Maintain outdoor physical activity even in cold weather — even grey daylight exposure helps. Užgavėnės (Mardi Gras, late February) is a traditional festival celebrating the defeat of winter — participate enthusiastically.
The state supplement to your 2nd pillar pension is free money — join immediately
Lithuania's 2nd pillar pension (pensijų kaupimas) provides a significant state bonus: if you contribute 3% of your gross salary, the state adds a supplement of approximately €28/month (2026). Over a 30-year career, this supplement alone (with compounding) can add €20,000–40,000 to your pension fund. For new arrivals who are automatically given the option to join — not joining means forfeiting this state contribution permanently for each month you delay. The deadline to join when starting new employment is typically 3 months.
⚡ Every month you delay joining the 2nd pillar is approximately €28 in lost state supplement — not recoverable retroactively.
✅ Join the 2nd pillar at pensijukaupimas.lt within your first month of employment in Lithuania. Choose a growth fund if you are under 50. The 3% contribution from your salary reduces your monthly take-home by approximately €30–45 at average wages — but immediately earns back ~€28 in state supplement, making it highly efficient.
Minimum wage rose to €1,038/month gross in 2026 — all employment contracts must comply
Lithuania's minimum monthly wage (MMA) increased to €1,038 gross (approximately €780 net) on 1 January 2026 — up from €924 in 2025. This is a 12.3% increase. Any employment contract paying at or below the previous minimum must have been updated. If your employer has not increased your wage to meet the new minimum, they are in legal violation. The State Labour Inspectorate (VDI) enforces minimum wage compliance and workers can file complaints. The minimum hourly rate is €6.35/hour in 2026.
⚡ Some employers delay updating minimum wage contracts hoping employees do not notice. Low-wage workers (cleaning, warehousing, hospitality, retail) most likely to be affected.
✅ Check your payslip to confirm your gross salary is at or above €1,038/month. If underpaid, first raise with HR/employer in writing. If not resolved, file a complaint with VDI (vdi.lt). VDI complaints can be filed online anonymously.
Vilnius cycling culture is growing fast — register a Bolt Bike or CycloCity bike for city transport
Vilnius has expanded its cycling infrastructure significantly since 2020. Bolt electric bikes and CycloCity station-based bikes cover the city centre. New dedicated cycle lanes connect Naujamiestis, Žvėrynas, Šnipiškės, and the Old Town (Senamiestis). Cycling to work in central Vilnius is genuinely viable for many residents. The city publishes a cycling route map at vilnius.lt. Autumn (September–October) and spring (April–May) offer ideal cycling weather. Helmets are legally required for cyclists under 18 but recommended for all.
⚡ Missing a convenient, healthy, and enjoyable urban transport option.
✅ Download the Bolt app for e-bike access. CycloCity stations require registration at cyclocity.lt. Purchase a personal bicycle and lock (lock it to a fixed point — bicycle theft in Vilnius is common). Vilnius's cycling map is available at vilnius.lt/ciklistas.
