Lithuania (LT)
Lithuania is the largest and most southerly of the three Baltic states, a semi-presidential EU republic celebrated for its remarkably preserved Baroque capital Vilnius (UNESCO World Heritage), dramatic coastal dunes at Neringa (also UNESCO), vibrant startup and fintech ecosystem (home of Revolut HQ, Vinted, Nord Security, and Hostinger), rapidly rising living standards, and a resilient population with deep cultural roots stretching back to one of the last pagan civilisations in Europe to adopt Christianity.
Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Lithuania.
Lithuania has well-developed family rights and benefits administered primarily through Sodra (social insurance) and the Ministry of Social Security and Labour (Socialinės apsaugos ir darbo ministerija, SADM). The parental benefits system is relatively generous by European standards — Lithuania tops rankings for parental leave duration. Both parents have individual rights to parental leave and benefits. Childcare subsidies are substantial. All benefits are linked to Sodra contributions — regular social insurance payment is essential for maximum entitlements.
Motinystės atostogos (Maternity leave)
Before birth: 70 calendar days before the expected birth date
After birth: 56 calendar days after birth (70 calendar days in case of complications or multiple births)
Job protection: Full job protection during maternity leave. Employer cannot terminate employment (except in cases of company liquidation). Right to return to the same or equivalent position. Salary must continue to be calculated as if employed (for benefit calculation purposes). No performance reviews or restructuring that could affect the employee during maternity leave.
Vaiko priežiūros atostogos (Childcare leave / Parental leave)
Max duration: Up to 3 years per child (until the child turns 3). Either parent or both parents can take parental leave. Leave can be split between parents or taken simultaneously in some cases. Parental benefit (vaiko priežiūros išmoka) from Sodra is paid for a defined benefit period.
Split rules / Elterngeld: Either parent may take parental leave. Parents can split the leave between them by mutual agreement. The parental benefit (Sodra payment) is: Option A — 100% of insured income for 1 year (until child is 1 year old), then 40% for the 2nd year. Option B — 70% of insured income for 2 years. The parent choosing Option A or B must notify Sodra. The non-working parent receives minimum benefit of approximately €402/month.

Sick child leave
Employees are entitled to Sodra-funded sick pay when caring for a sick child at home. For children under 7 years: up to 14 calendar days per illness (Sodra pays from day 1 for child illness). For children aged 7–14: up to 7 days per illness. Sodra pays the benefit at 65.94% of insured income. Parents of children with serious illnesses have extended entitlements.
Birth registration
A child must be registered at the Civil Registry (Civilinės metrikacijos skyrius) within 3 months of birth. Registration is done at any civil registry office or online. The child receives a birth certificate (gimimo liudijimas) and an asmens kodas. Both parents should be present for registration, or written consent from the absent parent. For children born to non-Lithuanian parents, nationality and citizenship questions may arise — consult your home country's consulate.
Childcare rights
Children have the right to a place in a municipal childcare institution (darželis). The municipality is legally obligated to provide a place. Priority given to children with disabilities, single parents, and socially vulnerable families. Childcare fee subsidies are available — the state funds the educational component; parents pay only for care and food. After 3 years of parental leave, the parent has the unconditional right to return to their previous job or equivalent position.
