Payment Culture
Lithuania is rapidly moving cashless. Card payments are accepted almost everywhere in cities. Contactless payments are dominant. Revolut is extraordinarily popular — Lithuania is Revolut's operational HQ and many Lithuanians use it as their primary account. Mobile payments via banks' apps are widespread. Cash is still used in rural areas and at some markets. ATMs are widely available in all towns.
ATM Tips
ATMs (bankomatai) are plentiful in Vilnius, Kaunas, and Klaipėda. Use Swedbank or SEB ATMs to avoid foreign card fees. Revolut and other fintech cards typically charge no ATM fees up to monthly limits. Avoid airport and hotel ATMs which charge higher fees.
Exchange Tips
Lithuania uses the euro since 2015 — no currency exchange needed within the Eurozone. For international transfers, Revolut and Wise offer excellent rates. Bank wire transfers within SEPA are free or very low cost. Non-SEPA transfers: use Wise or Revolut to avoid bank fees of €15–30 per transfer.
