Lithuanian Labour Exchange

Lietuvos darbo birža (LDB)

Register online at uzt.lt or visit a local Labour Exchange office (darbo birža). You will need your asmens kodas and proof of legal right to work. Registration provides access to job listings, requalification programmes, and unemployment benefit (if entitled).

💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens have full freedom of movement and can work in Lithuania without a work permit. They must register their residence at the Migration Department within 3 months if staying longer. No employer sponsorship or labour market test needed.

Non-EU Citizens

Non-EU nationals require a work permit (leidimas dirbti) or a single permit (vienas leidimas — combined residence and work permit). The employer typically initiates the process at the Migration Department (Migracijos departamentas). Permit categories include: highly-skilled worker (EU Blue Card), intra-company transfer, seasonal work, and general employment. The Lithuanian labour market test (darbo rinkos patikros) may apply for some categories, requiring the employer to show no suitable local candidate was available.

EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card (Mėlynoji kortelė) is available for highly-qualified non-EU workers. Requirements: job offer, relevant higher education (or 5 years experience), salary at least 1.5x the average gross salary (approximately €3,500/month in 2026). Duration: up to 4 years. Processed by the Migration Department (migris.lt). The Blue Card allows mobility across other EU member states after 18 months.

Freelancer Visa

Lithuania does not have a specific digital nomad visa but non-EU freelancers can apply for a temporary residence permit based on self-employment (individuali veikla). Must register a business activity in Lithuania and demonstrate sufficient income. The process requires opening a company or registering as self-employed (individualios veiklos pažyma) at VMI.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours 8–9 hours/day, 40-hour working week (standard). Flex time is common in IT and startups. Remote work is widely accepted in tech and knowledge economy sectors post-COVID. Many companies offer hybrid arrangements.

Annual leave Minimum 20 working days (4 calendar weeks) per year under the Lithuanian Labour Code. Some categories receive more: employees with disabilities, employees with children under 14, etc. Many employers offer 25–28 days in practice.

Sick leave First 2 days of sick leave: paid by employer (at 80% of average wage under Labour Code). Days 3–7: employer pays 40%. From day 8: Sodra (state social insurance) pays 62.06% of compensatory earnings up to the maximum. A medical certificate (nedarbingumo pažymėjimas) from a doctor is required.

Trial period Probationary period (bandomasis laikotarpis): maximum 3 months (6 months for managers and specialists under individual agreements). Either party may terminate during probation with 3 days' written notice.

Notice period Standard notice period: 1 month (employee initiating). For employer termination: 1–4 months depending on length of service. Longer service = longer notice. Notice can be substituted by payment in lieu.

Salary range Minimum wage 2026: €1,153/month gross (effective January 1 — an 11.1% increase from €1,038 in 2025). Median gross salary: approximately €1,700–2,000/month. IT and fintech: €2,500–6,000+/month. Finance and banking: €2,000–4,000/month. Management roles: €3,000–8,000/month. Lithuania's salaries have been rising rapidly — 10–15% annual increases in many sectors.

Pay frequency Monthly, paid by the last working day of the month. Some companies pay mid-month advance + end-of-month balance.
