Monaco (MC)
Monaco is the world's most expensive and glamorous sovereign micro-state — a 2.
Banking in Monaco
Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.
Monaco is one of the world's premier private banking centres — home to over 30 licensed banks managing an estimated €130 billion+ in client assets. The banking culture is fundamentally different from everyday retail banking: even "ordinary" accounts require extensive KYC documentation, source-of-funds declarations, and face-to-face meetings. Opening a Monaco bank account is a prerequisite for residency (the Sûreté Publique expects evidence of Monaco banking for serious residents) but the process is deliberate and thorough. Monaco banks are regulated by the CCAF (Commission de Contrôle des Activités Financières) under SICCFIN AML oversight.

Payment culture
Monaco is essentially a card and cashless economy. Visa, Mastercard, and Amex are accepted at virtually all restaurants, hotels, boutiques, and services. Contactless payment and Apple Pay/Google Pay are standard. Cash is used for small purchases (Marché de la Condamine, small cafés) and tips. Monaco ATMs (BNP Paribas, Société Générale, CIC on Boulevard des Moulins and Casino area) dispense euros. Cheques are rarely used.
Cash access
ATMs at major Monaco banks: Boulevard des Moulins, Casino area, La Condamine, and Fontvieille. All major bank ATMs available. Your bank's ATMs: typically fee-free. Other bank ATMs: €2–5 fee per withdrawal depending on your bank. International card use: Wise, Revolut, or your bank's international card — check fees before using. Monaco Telecom convenience stores in some locations have ATMs.
Monaco Credit Profile (via SICCFIN/banking system)
Monaco does not have a centralized public credit reference agency like France's Banque de France fichier or the UK's Equifax/Experian. Monaco banks conduct internal credit assessments based on your financial statements, asset declarations, and banking history. For residents who also have French accounts: the Banque de France Fichier Central des Chèques (FCC) and FICP (payment incident records) are accessible to Monaco banks via the Franco-Monégasque banking relationship.
Free annual check: No Monaco-specific free credit check exists. If you have had French banking: request your Banque de France records via banque-france.fr/particuliers. For international credit history: Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion reports from your home country may be requested by Monaco banks.
Monaco banking is relationship-based rather than score-based. A long-standing relationship with a Monaco bank, consistent positive balance history, and transparent source-of-funds documentation matters more than a credit score. New Monaco residents should expect 6–18 months before Monaco banks will extend credit facilities — build the banking relationship first.
International transfers
Monaco is excellent for international transfers given its private banking infrastructure. SEPA transfers to EU countries: free, same/next business day (Monaco participates in SEPA despite not being an EU member). International (non-SEPA) wire transfers: €15–50 fee at retail banks, often lower or free at private banking level. Wise is widely used by Monaco residents for cost-effective non-EUR transfers — works well from Monaco accounts. Monaco banks are efficient for large private banking transfers but may require documentation for large amounts (SICCFIN reporting).
