🌍 Special Expat Tax Rules
Monaco's key tax advantage: ZERO personal income tax for all residents except French nationals. French citizens living in Monaco are taxed in France under the 1963 Franco-Monégasque convention (France insisted on this carve-out to prevent its wealthy citizens from tax-avoiding by moving 30km to Monaco). All other nationalities pay zero Monaco income tax on worldwide income. No capital gains tax. No wealth tax. No dividend tax. Inheritance tax exists in Monaco (see estateAndInheritance.ts) — rates depend on relationship to deceased. No property tax on principal residence (a Monaco-specific advantage vs France).
📋 Double Tax Treaties
Monaco has a limited network of double tax treaties given its unusual tax status (no income tax to "double"). Key treaties: France (1963 — the foundational convention that also imposes French income tax on French residents of Monaco), Luxembourg (banking/financial information exchange), several CRS/FATCA information exchange agreements. Monaco signed the OECD Common Reporting Standard (CRS) — financial account information is automatically exchanged with partner countries. Important: residents whose home country has worldwide taxation (USA, UK, Germany, etc.) remain subject to home-country taxes on some income despite living in Monaco. A Monaco tax adviser is essential.
