Leaving Monaco
How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
3 months before departure: give lease notice (check your specific contract), notify key Monaco institutions (CCSS, Direction du Travail if employed). 2 months before: notify Monaco bank of departure, begin winding down Monaco professional activities if self-employed. 1 month before: cancel utilities and Monaco Telecom, arrange mail forwarding (notify Mairie de Monaco). 2–4 weeks before: conduct move-out inspection (état des lieux de sortie), return residence card preparation, obtain tax domicile certificate for year of departure. Final week: return Monaco residence card to Sûreté Publique, read all meters, hand in all keys and building access cards. After departure: monitor Monaco bank account for final statements, collect rental deposit, file any pending Monaco professional tax returns.
Deregistration
Notify the Sûreté Publique de Monaco of your departure — your Monaco residence card must be returned or surrendered. Also notify the Mairie de Monaco (Service d'État Civil / Service de Population) to cancel your Monaco address registration. Failing to deregister creates ongoing obligations: CCSS contributions may continue to be assessed, and your Monaco address may receive official correspondence with legal deadlines. Notify the Direction des Services Fiscaux if you hold a Monaco tax domicile certificate — update your tax residency status with your home country accordingly.
Tax clearance
Monaco has no personal income tax, so there is no final tax return for most residents. However: (1) If you have business interests in Monaco (SARL, SAM, or self-employment): ensure all Monaco professional tax (taxe sur les bénéfices) filings are current and obtain a fiscal clearance certificate from the Direction des Services Fiscaux. (2) Your home country may require notification of the end of your Monaco tax residency — crucial for countries with worldwide taxation (USA, UK, Germany). Notify your home country tax authority and your Monaco tax adviser of your departure date to ensure clean tax residency transition. Obtain a final Monaco attestation de résidence fiscale for the tax year of your departure.
Pension portability
CAR (Caisse Autonome des Retraites) pension rights accumulated in Monaco vest once you reach the minimum contribution period. Contact CAR before leaving to: (1) obtain a statement of your accumulated points and projected Monaco pension, (2) confirm the process for receiving your Monaco pension at retirement age from abroad, and (3) understand whether your home country has any social security agreement with Monaco affecting totalization. For EU nationals: EU Regulation 883/2004 coordinates EU social security systems — Monaco is not an EU member but has bilateral conventions with some EU countries. Non-EU nationals: pension rights remain vested and payable at Monaco retirement age (currently aligned with French retirement age of 64–67) to a foreign bank account.
Health insurance
Notify CCSS (Caisse de Compensation des Services Sociaux) of your departure date — your CCSS coverage ends on the date your Monaco employment ends or your voluntary contributions cease. Ensure you have alternative health insurance coverage in your destination country from your first day there. Request a CCSS insurance history certificate (relevé de carrière) for potential use in your home country's pension or healthcare coordination.
Bank account
Monaco bank accounts can typically be maintained after departure — useful for receiving any remaining Monaco income, managing Monaco property interests, or ongoing financial connections to the Principality. However: Monaco banks are required to conduct periodic KYC reviews, and if you are no longer a Monaco resident, your account may be reclassified to a non-resident account with different terms and documentation requirements. Notify your Monaco bank of your new address and residency status. For large transfers out of Monaco: plan these carefully given SICCFIN AML reporting requirements for significant movements.
Utilities
Cancel Monaco Telecom broadband/mobile contract (typically 1–3 months notice depending on contract type). Cancel Monaco electricity and water (Mairie de Monaco / Direction de l'Environnement) — provide final meter readings and a forwarding address for the final bill. Ensure your Monaco apartment utilities are transferred to the landlord or new tenant before departure.
Rental contract
Monaco lease notice periods: typically 1–3 months as specified in your lease. Notice must be given in writing (lettre recommandée avec accusé de réception). Conduct the état des lieux de sortie (move-out inspection) with your landlord or agent — this is essential to recover your deposit. Return all keys, access cards, and building access devices. Recover your rental deposit (dépôt de garantie) — legally due within 1–3 months of departure if no deductions are justified.
