South African Home Affairs and many institutions require the unabridged (full) version rather than the short-form certificate. Required for work visa, critical skills visa and permanent residence applications. South Africa requires clearances from all countries where you lived for 12 months or more after turning 18. Certificates must be recent — DHA typically requires issue within 6 months. Apostille from Hague member countries; non-English certificates require certified translation. Obtain from your home country national police authority (South Africans use SAPS clearance).
Required for Critical Skills Visa applications, SAQA evaluation, professional body registration and university admissions. South Africa is a Hague Apostille member; apostille from Hague member countries. Course outlines or syllabi may be required by SAQA. Non-English documents require certified English translation.
South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) foreign qualifications evaluation is often required for immigration applications, regulated profession registration and some employers. Apply online at saqa.org.za; processing typically 6–12 weeks. The SAQA report is issued separately from the original degree and does not require apostille itself.
Required for work visa sponsorship, bank account opening, rental applications and professional registration with bodies such as HPCSA (Healthcare), ECSA (Engineering), SAICA (Accounting). Reference letters should be on company letterhead with contact details. Non-English documents require certified English translation.
Typically 3–6 months of statements required for visa applications, rental affordability checks, school deposits and credit applications. International statements are generally accepted in English without additional translation.
Use generic medicine names when bringing prescriptions for controlled substances to avoid issues at customs. Bring vaccination records, specialist reports and chronic-condition summaries for continuity of care with South African GPs and specialists. Medical-aid (private health insurance) underwriting requires disclosure of pre-existing conditions.
Foreign driving licences (with a certified English translation if not in English) and an IDP are valid for up to 12 months from the date of arrival. After 12 months, apply for conversion to a South African driving licence at the local traffic department (municipality). Some foreign licences require re-testing; bring your full driving history or no-claims letter for insurance purposes.
South African car and home-contents insurers may consider your foreign insurance claims history when calculating premiums. A letter from your home-country insurer on official letterhead confirming years of cover and claim-free periods is useful at inception.
South Africa requires a state veterinarian export certificate from your home country's government vet, a current rabies vaccination record, a microchip certificate and an import permit from the South African Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD). Permit applications should be submitted 30+ days before travel. Dogs and cats from most countries are not subject to quarantine if documentation is complete.
Existing foreign wills, trust deeds, beneficiary nominations and property deeds should be reviewed with a South African attorney and the Master of the High Court after arrival. South Africa has specific rules for foreign wills; an apostilled foreign will can be recognised, but local advice is essential.
📜 What is an Apostille?
An apostille is an official certification that validates a document for international use. It is issued by a designated authority in the country where the document was issued (usually a court or government office). Required for documents from Hague Convention member states.
🌍 Certified Translations
Certified translations must be done by a sworn/authorised translator. In South Africa, only translations by officially registered translators are accepted by government offices. Keep originals — they may be returned after verification.
