South Africa (ZA)
South Africa combines English-friendly professional life, major finance and tech hubs, relatively affordable private healthcare and housing, world-class nature, wine regions and a complex but vibrant post-apartheid society.
Bringing Pets to South Africa
Requirements, costs and process for relocating with your pets.
Vaccinations
Restricted Breeds
Plus Breed restrictions are usually airline, housing/body-corporate or municipal by-law issues rather than a single national banned-breed list. Check pit bull/power-breed rules locally.
💰 Costs
Budget R8,000-R40,000+ per pet including vet work, export certificate, import permit, agent, airline crate and cargo. Large dogs and complex origins cost more.
🐕 Dog Tax / Registration
No national dog tax. Some municipalities require dog licences/permits or limit number of dogs; estates and body corporates often impose pet rules.
Register with a local vet soon after arrival, especially in areas with ticks, biliary, rabies risk or snake exposure. Ask about parasite prevention suitable to your province.
📋 Relocation Process
Apply for veterinary import permit from DALRRD before travel. Complete microchip/vaccination/testing requirements, obtain official export health certificate from origin authority, book pet as manifest cargo/excess baggage as airline allows, clear veterinary checks on arrival.
Get written pet permission in the lease and body-corporate/estate rules before signing housing. Many rentals say "pet friendly" but restrict size, number, breed or garden requirements.
