💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU/EEA citizens have no special automatic work rights. They need the same South African immigration permission as other foreign nationals.

Non-EU Citizens

Most foreign nationals need a work visa before taking local employment. Main routes include General Work, Critical Skills, Intra-Company Transfer, Business and endorsed spousal/relative routes.

EU Blue Card

No EU Blue Card exists. The Critical Skills Work Visa is the closest skilled route, with SAQA and professional-body requirements.

Freelancer Visa

No simple freelancer visa for local clients. Remote workers serving foreign employers/clients may use the Remote Work Visitor Visa if they meet DHA requirements; local self-employment usually needs Business Visa or appropriate endorsement.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours 40-45 hours/week in many sectors. BCEA ordinary hours cap is generally 45/week, with overtime rules.

Annual leave Minimum annual leave is 21 consecutive days per annual leave cycle, often interpreted as 15 working days for a 5-day week. Senior/professional contracts may offer 20-25 working days.

Sick leave Over a 36-month cycle, paid sick leave equals the number of days normally worked in 6 weeks, subject to medical-certificate rules.

Trial period Probation is common, usually 3-6 months, but dismissal still requires fair process and valid reason.

Notice period BCEA minimums: 1 week if employed 6 months or less, 2 weeks if 6-12 months, 4 weeks after 12 months or for farm/domestic workers with more than 6 months.

Salary range Highly varied. Professional roles in Johannesburg/Cape Town often range R350k-R900k/year; senior tech/finance can exceed R1.2m; many local wages are far lower.

Pay frequency Monthly salary is standard. Weekly/fortnightly pay appears in some wage sectors.
